  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. I have a trojan BackDoor. Graybird and cannot remove Legacy_MCHINJDRV from registry in Windows XP

I am running Windows XP SP2 with Norton Internet Security 2005. Each time I start my computer Norton AntiVirus finds a trojan BackDoor.Graybird and deletes a file from my temp folder. This stops the trojan from running, however, it keeps restarting whenever I reboot the computer and agian NAV 2005 finds the temp file and deletes it.  I have found the subkeys in the Regisrty that Norton and TrendMicro say to delete and can delete all but the following key:

"HKEY-LOCAL-MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Enum/Root/LEGACY_MCHINJDRV"

Each time I try to delete the subkey I get an error message:

"Cannot delete Legacy_MCHINJDRV: Error while deleting key."

I have tried regedit in Safe Mode with no luck.

NAV 2005 and TrendMicro Housecall do not find anything wrong (virus,trojan etc.) after NAV 2005 deletes the file upon rebooting. When I delete the other bad subkeys from the registry they come back after rebooting. So I believe that the subkey Legacy_MCHINJDRV is the main bad guy.

HOW CAN I DELETE A SUBKEY THAT DOESN'T WANT TO BE DELETED?!?!

Appreciate your help with this, Norton articles simply say to delete the key they reference a tool to restore the registry to it will function properly but it did not help. Thanks.Start Free Trial
