Question

Recover Symantec Antivirus Server Password

Asked by: vectorform

I am looking for a way to recover a lost password for Symantec Antivirus Server (Corporate, 8.1).

I have seen a few postings on here documenting different methods, some of them registry edits, but in some cases I have not been able to find the entries others say they have.

I also saw one posting saying to edit a registry value named 'ConsolePassword' to a certain value to reset the password to 'a' but I am hesitant to do this.

I did read there is a tool named 'iforgot.exe', but it is not included anywhere on the server or on any clients with the SAV client installed.

If anyone could tell me where I can get 'iforgot.exe' or has another solution please let me know!  Our client does not have a support contract (although they are fully licensed) with Symantec so we have had a hard time getting help.

Thanks in advance.

Increased point value to 500 - I have found one source claiming it cannot be done because of a type of "secure encryption" used for Norton Corporate, but would like to confirm that.

Hi vectorform

It does work - I've just tried it

navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/INTEL/LanDesk/VirusProtect/CurrentVersion
Right Click and select Export - save the registry export to a safe location as a safeguard
now locate the key ConsolePassword
Right Click and Delete
Close regedit
Open the SAV Console
Entery symantec as the password to expand the Server Group.

Don't forget to reset your Server Group Password

Excellent, this worked fine - however is there a way to change it, not just reset it to symantec, without reinstalling it?

Hi

Once you've defaulted the password as above;

Right Click the Server Group
Select Configure Server Group Password
Enter the old password (now symantec)
Enter the New Password of your choice.
Confirm the New Password.
Click OK

when you delete the key, you loose the group.
i tried that and there were no groups in the console. Tried changing the password, then running the discovery service, still no groups..
IF you are new to teh network with the lost password, you dont know whats supposed to be there so it might look OK, but the reality is that you just lost the groups..
at least in my case..

by: packettracerPosted on 2008-03-18 at 10:28:27ID: 21153547

OK, correction..
if you change teh value to 20A6C921DDF2F93599E8D6A39EC13A23ECD436B723F, you will loose the groups.
if you delete the key alltogether, you will reset to symantec..
this works..
so.. KUDOS to BarryCoe..
Peace all

BarryCoe, i tried doing this, but there is no ConsolePassword key to found on my server. Any ideas? Thanks!

My tghought would be that as long at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/INTEL/LanDesk/VirusProtect/CurrentVersion tree exists then you should be able to log into the console using the password symantec, this should then create the registry key, once in the console chnage the password as follows;

Right Click the Server Group
Select Configure Server Group Password
Enter the old password (now symantec)
Enter the New Password of your choice.
Confirm the New Password.
Click OK

Hope this helps

As a side issue 8.1's engine is now to old to be 100% against the latest threats I would suggest you upgrade. Even the latest AV Versions are having problems stopping a lot of malware.
