Question

Internet Explorer - Zones - Unknown zone (mixed) ... but which zones are mixed?

Asked by: DutchExpert

Hi,
I am struggling with some security settings. This applies to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP SP2
I am running an application (database application stored on hard disc) within Internet Explorer for which I have a security conflict.
Internet Explorer concludes that I am in an unknown zone (mixed) even though my PC name is added correctly to the trusted zone site list. In itself this might not be a problem as my pc might have been determined to also be in the Intranet zone... however I can not tell. The status bar of internet explorer simply states Unknown Zone (mixed). Is there any way to identify which mixed zones were found ?

thanks for any thoughts on this.

To set up sites in the Local intranet zone

1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Security tab.
 2. Click the Local intranet zone.
 3. Click Sites, and then select the following check boxes that apply:
Include all local (intranet) sites not listed in other zones.
Include all sites that bypass the proxy server.
 Include all network paths (UNCs).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Type the address of the site you want to include in this zone, and then click Add.
6. To require that server verification be used, select the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.

Hi
Although this is a useful place to have a look, this does not contain the information I am after.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/security/setup.mspx

My problem remains that the internet explorer status bar states Unknown zone (mixed)... and I like to understand which zones are mixed. So can I/ how can i trace which zones are identified? The reason this is important to me is the following:
If the Mixed Zone is a combination of Trusted and Intranet than I am fine as my application works correctly. If the mixed zone is a combination of Internet and Trusted... or Internet and Intranet than I might have a problem with my application. (to be honoust, I am not compeltely sure about that as.... I do not know which zone settings will be used in a mixed combination).
Hope this information helps you to help me.
/Lennard

Is this a web page, like a .html or .htm file that IE is rendering, and complaining about the mixed zones?
You can try the following solutions, rename the htm or .html file to .hta instead, or insert mark of the web in the html page:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/ie/ieak/techinfo/deploy/60/en/appendix.mspx#EJAA  (in the "Local Machine Lockdown zone"
Mark of the web is like this:

The (0022), rather the 22 stands for how many character in http://www...etc  remove the www and it's 19 chars ...

Hi Rich,
Thank for the link, this has given me an awful lot of information on how this stuff is working. Still not solving my issue..
As far as your question.. my problem is related to running Siebel 7-7 Dedicated mobile client with a local database (aka Siebel remote). Previoulsy all worked fine, the application was automatically assigned to the Local Intranet zone. Our company has migrated PC's to Active Direcotry recently (from NT 4 set-up before)...
Anyway, the PC names / DNS suffix has chanegd and as a result, Siebel starts with http://PCname.xxx.company.net/ instead of http://PCname as previosuly...  Now we see that people are actually always in the internet one, unless they add http://*.xxx.company.net to their trusted site list... Even then some people end up seeing the application ending up in the Unknown zone(mixed zone) situation. As stated my problem is identifying which zones so I can understand potential the impact / restrictions that apply.
FYI (siebel requires to be ran either in Local Intranet zone or trusted zone).

Hi there, am wondering if you have resolved this issue as I am experiencing the exact same problem! Using Siebel 7-7 too and it's changing zones on me. Would appreciate it if you could share your solution if you found one. Thanks!

Hi
Unfortunately I never found out why I get the unknown zone (mixed zone) message.
it is however not a mayor issue anymore for us. Just to be sure, are you referring to 7-7 mobile client as well ?

Hi, I'm using Siebel 7.7 web client actually. Why was this no longer an issue for you? I can't seem to find what is causing this zone problem to occur, and it creates issues when I launch functionalities that invokes Windows dialog boxes (adding attachments)

by: DutchExpertPosted on 2006-03-21 at 11:18:18ID: 16250268

Our problem was related to the Siebel mobile clients, and specifically caused by an Active directory migration (we came form NT domain).  We resolved it by forcing Trusted zone entries. So whatever happened, the server was in the trusted ozne, and it is possible that the additional zone is the local Intranet one. In which case, it does not matter to have a mixed zone situation as the application will behave correctly (both Local Intranet en trusted zone should work fine for siebel). Just as a FYI, these are our conclusions on security settings for Siebel to work correct . Everythgin with ! is a must setting which is more than siebel officially states. To give nput to your problem situation, is difficult as you need to specify a lot more details about DNS and server names which you probably do not wish to do in this forum.

Thanks for providing the browser settings.
In the end we found that the problem was actually caused by some errors on the web server configuration. After fixing the config, the correct zone was displayed.
Thanks again for your help.

Can you elaborate on the changes you made on the web server configuration ? I like to understand how the webserver settigns caused your problem so that I perhaps can prevent them from happening on our side.

We basically have multiple environments sharing the same web server, so when we created this particular environment, we missed out some folders in the public/enu directory. After these folders were restored, the mixed zone error was resolved.

Hi,
I deliberately left this topic open to see if people still had good thoughts. Not compeltely successful unfortunately.
I did get a good suggestion elsewhere !
My main problem remains... why do I get a mixed zone result... and which data streams are causing it.
The suggestion recently made to me is to run a proxi server on my PC before I connect to the siebel application.THerefore I am able to analyse which data is pulled to the client.. and hence I can obtain an answer.
found a good tool called Charles.
search gooogle on these terms
