One of my customers has had a rather severe downloader/trojan infection, which included:
W32/Downloader.ADYT
As named by F-Prot AV:
http://www.f-prot.com/
It appears that this, *or* the trojan that it downloaded has disabled/messed up the firewall capability of the Windows XP Home Firewall.
Attempting to turn the Firewall on in the security centre gives the error:
We're sorry. The Security Centre could not turn on windows firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Frirewall in Control Panel.
On trying this, I get:
Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display firewall settings. <OK>
I have tried using restore points, and this has not solved or altered the problem.
All suggestions on how to fix this are welcome!

Letting us look at your hijackthis log is an excellent idea.
also try resetting windows firewall settings.

Try resetting the Windows Firewall by deleting the "WindowsFirewall" keys
Click Start, Run and type in;
regedit
press enter and navigate to the following locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE
exit regedit and restart.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE
Neither exist.
I'm reasonably confident with the 'cleaning' of the system. The hijack this log comes up as fine with the analysis link above (with the exception that it tells me that I'm not running a firewall! I can account for every process that is shown using processexplorer from system internals. The particular downloader was only only added to the F-Prot database about 2 weeks ago, and I've been unable to find any additional info on it:(...other than it seems to have trashed the firewall!
Trying to run 'firewall.cpl' in the run command box also gave me:

Also tried:

to no avail:(

Phew - that was a little painful! Re-registering 2 dlls:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\atl.dl
and hit OK
Second:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\hnetcf
and Hit OK
after the merge of the registry settings, and reseting of firewall appears to have done the job!
Best value for money this client has every received - I cap my labour charges at £50, for non corporate customers - this problem took me almost 5 hours! Was getting very close to considering a re-install.
