The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows Update for Remote Laptop Restricted Users

Asked by matrixnz in Windows Network Security

Tags: , , ,

Scenario: 800 Desktops, 250 Laptops, Windows 2003 Servers, Active Directory, located at 10 Sites across the country.  Users are members of the "USERS" Group.  One Windows 2003 Server running WSUS at central Site, all clients, Desktops and Laptops, connecting and updating successfully across the WAN.  Large number of Laptop Users work overseas for 2 weeks - 3 months at a time, users connect to system using Remote Office, Dialup.

Question: How do I get the Windows Updates to update these users Laptops while overseas?

We do insert a Local Admin account on the system with a password, which expires depending on the length of their trip away.  The users need to contact us for the password as this is only in cases where the user requires Administrative rights for legitimate purposes.  However we prefer the user doesn't logon to this account at all, we could allow users to use this to run Windows Update manually, but I believe this would be combersome and would have to remind the users to update on a regular basis.  Also the list of updates from Microsoft for Windows and Office differ from the set we push out on a regular basis, for e.g. we do not push Service Packs and prefer all our systems to be identical until we have tested these thoroughly.

Question: Has anyone opened their WSUS Server via the Firewall?
Question: Has anyone used a secondary server outside the Firewall?  If so is their anything to consider when taking such a step.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
