The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Secure Remote Desktop

Asked by ergenbgr in Windows Network Security, Miscellaneous Security, Security Issues in Programming

I work as a part-time consultant for a medium sized municipality (Population <100,000). I am in the process of developing an audit program which necessitates frequent ODBC access to AS400 records. My schedule is such that I cannot be on site to maintain the productivity goals that I have set with my employer. To improve my productivity I requested "Remote Desktop" access so that I can work in the evenings when I am out of town and sitting in a motel room. I know there are many security issues related to such access but feel that the productivity gain will be substantial and may be worth the risk. My employer is totally supportive and has begun to envision other benefits of such technology within her areas of responsibility. But, my employer and I both know that our IT Director is highly security conscious, justifiably, and we will need to do a real sales job to get him to agree to allow such access.

I am vaguely familiar with VPN tunneling and commercial services like "GoToMyPc". Is there a product or technique that will allow for SECURE (relative to the productivity gains) remote desktop access and not put the municipalitys network at an unacceptable level of security risk? The reason remote desktop is preferable over VPN tunneling is that I do not have licensing for the software tools available on-site. It would appear impractical for me to duplicate the software licensing onto my production laptop when they are readily available through a remote desktop solution.

Thank you for reviewing my question and I look forward to hearing form my Expert partners.
