The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Setting Windows XP Pro SP3 printer permissions correctly ?

Asked by RetroRocker in Windows Network Security, Windows XP Operating System, Programming User Management

Tags: printer permissions, permissions, groups, limited account

Hi
I have setup a very small P2P network with 2 workstations (WinXP Pro SP3) and 2 printers, a Samsung ML2855ND laser and a HP 8500 Inkjet. All works well except for one thing, limited account users cannot print to the laser but they can print to the inkjet.
This seems like a permissions problem to me but what is the correct way to approach this ? ...
Do I make limited account users members of the Power User group (there are currently none) ?
Why does one printer allows printing by limited account users but the other doesn't ?
When I look at the property pages for the laser printer from a limited account, some are missing and an error is generated ...

C:\Windows\Explorer.exe (in the title bar) then ...
Function address 0x6a90f001 caused a protection fault (exception code 0xc0000005)
Some or all property pages may not be displayed.

... which is of course absolutely correct ! ;)

So how do I get around this correctly, I can't believe I have the only network in the universe where a limited account user needs to print to a Samsung ML2855ND laser printer :)
BTW. part of my research revealed this ...
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_sceacctpols.mspx?mfr=true
... which is pretty informative but then again, none of the printer property pages, for either printer, has a security tab under any type of account.

thanks RR
