The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problems sharing a folder with XP Pro

I have a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine here, connected to three others on a basic network via an ADSL router.

I'm trying to create a shared folder on this machine and access it from the others, and from this one too.  It's to be running some accounting software that expects to be able to see \\computername\foldername\ from each machine it runs on.

None of the other PCs can access \\computername\foldername\  - but even more oddly - neither can 'computername' itself!  Each throws the "No permission, check with your administrator" message.  They don't even work with \\192.168.1.3\foldername\

The PCs *are* connected to the network - they can all access the same NAS drive and they can all see out to the internet.

"Simple filesharing" is enabled, and I have created a new user on computername and tried creating an account there, but even then it cannot be accessed locally.  "File and printer sharing" is enabled as a Windows Firewall exception and there's no other firewall or security software installed save for Avast antivirus (which has no firewall component).

Does anyone have any clues what might stop this from working?

Browsing Network Neighbourhood doesn't show 'computername' as an option when looking from the other PCs if that gives any clues?  (Possibly unrelated, when trying to use Remote Desktop between two of the other computers, I had to use the IP address rather than the hostname, though *nothing* has changed (it hasn't even been rebooted until today when the problems came to a head) on the router for 2 years so I'm sure it's not blocking something)

Determine whether you belong to the correct workgoup
Open System Properties in Control Panel.
Click the Computer Name tab.
The workgroup name is listed on this page.
If the workgroup is incorrect or a domain is listed, join the correct workgroup.
To join a workgroup
On the Computer Name tab in System properties, click Change.
Click Workgroup, and then type the name of the workgroup.
Click OK.
Restart your computer when prompted to do so.
After your computer restarts, log in to the computer, and try to access the network resource.
Note To open System Properties, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

Thanks, though all PCs are set to just 'WORKGROUP' (and the PC can't access itself :S )

Check that NETBIOS(TCP & UDP - 137, 138,139) is not being blocked by the XP firewall. What are the other machines, XP also? If so, check them too.

Hope this helps.

It wasn't the firewall.  I disabled the Windows firewall and it still didn't work  - curiously, not even locally.

I disabled the antivirus (Avast) and it still didn't work.

I did figure out why \\computername\ didn't resolve or provide a listing of the available folders but \\192.168.1.3\ did... the DNS nameservers were set to the OpenDNS servers on each PC instead of on the router, so local addresses were never going to resolve.

The filesharing problem was solved only when Avast was *uninstalled*.  Having it disabled wasn't enough - it had to be removed.  Crazy, because it doesn't have its own firewall component.  After rebooting and confirming that with everything put back (including registry changes that the MSKB gave, but originally intended for Win NT 3.51) and the firewall on, the filesharing WORKED before installing Avast, but broke again after it was installed from scratch.

For completion and people in the future seeking clues on the same problem, while Windows's own error message was generic and fairly useless, at the command prompt entering NET USE H: \\computername\sharename gave the error: "System Error 1130 has occurred. Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

The problem began on 13 or 14 May, which coincides with Avast's (automatic) update to version 4.8.1195 detailed at http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-4-home_pro-revision-history.html which was dated 12 May.  I don't know what changed and broke in our configuration - pretty sure that the install was a default one - but the solution was its complete removal, and replacement with a different antivirus program completely.
