By default, Windows does not have security that protects folders as you suggest. Your choices are either use built in security via NTFS permissions (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/ntfs/sec-c.html) or look for a non microsoft solution (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=windows+password+protected+folder).
Hi,
Not possible, you can set permission under security setting.

Yes you can... with a freeware attached:
SaveIt
http://www.webattack.com/get/saveit.html
and FileVault for specific files...

Good luck

Yip - not possible under native MS.
You can set the permissions on the folder for prevent various groups or users from accesssing the folder assuming multiple users log in under different user names and this is what you want to do.
Your only alternative is to add a third party application which will encrypt / protect the folder for you.
Have a Google for "password protect folder".
Remember - you get what you pay for!
Freeware / Shareware may be enough for your needs but if you want a secure solution in a corporate environment then go for a professional package with better security and support.

in XP you can try making the folder private in the sharing properties of the folder !
I am not sure but I would hazard a guess at the following:
Share a folder but only allow Guest permissions
Then set a password on the Guest account
When a network user tries to access the share, it will ask for the password to the Guest Account

Yes you can provide protection to a folder or its contents as described in the comment from " ErikPhilips " given an NTFS partition.
but still this may not be exact password protection as you have asked for. more over it may nt help you if someone physically takes away your disk or he boots from some other os.
I would recommend you encrypt the folderand its contents using EFS provided with microsoft 2k/xp os on NTFS partitions.
Procedure is to
rigth click on the folder->general tab -> advanced-> tick "encrypt contents to secure data" ->ok ->Apply
another menu will pop up.
which will give u option to apply changes to this folder or to sub folders also.
do whatever u wish.
But be sure to read manuals to backup data etc.
