The Wonders of SysKey

Hello every1. I ran across this security tip and hope it will help further secure your pc(s).
Also, please post any comments on this security measure.

***With the help of this tip, you will need to insert a special floppy disk that you make in order to log on. If you loose the disk, you are locked out.***

1.Click on start run and then type in SYSKEY, hit return
2.On the first window that opens you shall need to click on UPDATE.
3.On the next window ensure the System generated password is selected. (this is what I recommend)
4.Also ensure the Store startup Key on a floppy drive is selected click on OK (Yes, make sure there is a blank disk in the floppy drive). Follow the prompts closing out of the windows and restart.
5.Remove the disk and restart.
This tip adds an extra layer of security. When you reboot your XP system, you will be asked for this diskette prior to accessing you login screen.

*****Once again, If you loose the disk, you are locked out*****

Enjoy!

heh.... and why did that never get popular u think?

Syskey is tricky stuff.... its somewhat low level, and the changes that something will go wrong are higher then average to say the least. Above all, its kinda old. account passwords, bios passwords, and above all, lock programs work way better.

Lock programs lock your PC, and when you restart, you have to enter the pass to enter. they are much cleaner, and in case it goes wrong, safer.

i dont want to be a jerk, to say its a bad idea, but there are just risk with the syskey. lets just say it kinda goes to far for protection only.
Worst thing is....
Imagine when the floppy gets a bad sector.

Bit risky imo. Would be better if it allowed memorysticks though. But as mentioned above it is just one layer of security you CAN use.

Thanx for the tip though :)
