Firewall says "ON" but I turned it off!   Is the message wrong, or am I wrong?

My Microsoft Security Center says I have the MS firewall turned on.  I do NOT want MS Firewall.  How do I ensure that I have it turned off.  Can someone show me a foolproof way to shut it off, or check the registry to ensure that is is arleady off?  I am not afraid of using the registry.

ALSO, it says the MS virus protection is on.  I do NOT want the MS virus protection.  I have my own.  How can I ensure that the MS protection is turned off?  Can someone tell me how to turn the MS virus protection off?
