Question

AVG Firewall blocks wireless printer and router in network folder Vista x64

Asked by: swampy1979

Hi I have just installed AVG firewall on my Vista 64 machine, however now in the network folder (Start, Network) I see PC1 PC2 & Server1, but Printer & Router have dissapeared. I have ssdp enabled and uPnP enabled in services. with windows firewall they all showed up fine but with AVG firewall I can not find any way of showing the router or printer in the network folder, I have even tried allowing UPnP Device Host service file C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalService and still they do not show.

please help

You will probably need to put a rule in the AVG firewall to allow incoming connections from those devices.  Check the firewall log to see it anything relates to the devices.

If you have installed the AVG Plus Firewall Edition, ran the Automatic configuration wizard and then, after the computer has restarted, your local network is not accessible, please check the following configuration:
AVG Control Center->AVG Firewall->Configure->System tab->"Microsoft file sharing and printing"
This application´s default setting is "Block" (for security reasons). If your local network is not accessible or you cannot print on network printers, please re-configure this option to "Allow" (choose "Microsoft file sharing and printing"->click on "Edit rule" button->click on "Edit rule" button)

Hi, Thanks guys I checked the log and file and print services.

File and print was already enabled the devices worked but they did not show in the network.

But thanks to your advice with the log and exploring the rules I discovered I needed to allow Windows RPC Service for all.

If I allow only for safe networks the printer shows up but the router does not, but if I allow for all networks then the printer and router show up.

However I do have one more query though, on my network I have made my LAN computers a safe network, and my Hamachi (LAN only) network safe.

My router has a firewall built in, so I hope this is giving me good protection from the internet (please correct me if I am wrong)

My question is can I safely allow my Realtek Ethernet NIC(behind router) to be defined as a safe adapter? That way I may be able to set RPC as safe networks rather that all networks.

Any suggestions or davice greatly received

Thanks
