Question

replacement to "Tiny Server Firewall 2005"

Asked by: hathehariken

hello,

in my old computer, i used to run Windows 2000 SP4 on a P4 platform with Tiny Server Firewall 2005 ver 6.5.126, which i found perfect for my use.

i have recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate SP1 x64 on an Core i7 platform.
as expected, my old firewall simply refused to work with Vista.

but the problem is, i can find no firewall that will match the versatality of TSF.
can you please recommend a firewall (that has all the relevant features of TSF) which i can run on Vista x64?

links to screenshots will be appreciated very much.

thanx,
hathehariken.

the firewall you recommend should have a robust Activity Monitor, with bandwidth monitoring based on DLL, Application, local port and remote port
alternatively you can recommend a separate standalone activity monitor.

thanx,

As it is available in both home version and pro version

my system is x64 (to address 24 gb RAM)
naturally, i downloaded and installed the x64 version.

i read the link you mentioned, but i dont think the 32-64 confusion has happened to me, but to be cautious, i am downloading the x64 version again.
lets see what happens - i'll post of any developments.

i redownloaded, and noticed a size difference from the old download.
installed the new file, and it installed correctly, now it is updating its database.

from the initial looks, it looks very complicated - the advanced options are hidden behind 3-4 menu buttons, and custom rule creation on the fly is not possible
the activity monitor is broken in 2 pcs. and not realtime (very bad), sorting by coloumns in the AMs is not possible

if anyone of you have used TSF (back in the Win 2000 days) you will understand what i am talking about.

maybe i need to get more familiar with comodo, before i give a definitive answer, but i dont think comodo can satisfy all me requirements.
i dont mind a commercial software (as long as it meets my requirements)

i am also downloading the 64 bit Outpost trial from:
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/download.php
will update you on this.

if you need, i can post screenshots of TSF to show you exactly what i am looking for.....

thanks for taking your time to help me out.

Ok more more firewall

by: hatheharikenPosted on 2009-08-26 at 10:01:05ID: 25189862

in the short run, comodo worked pretty well, within its design constraints.
after creating about 700 rules, it went slower and slower to the point where it now has 823 rules for network access, and creating another rule takes 4 minutes of system freeze.

so comodo is now uninstalling, and taking its time doing it.

i did a little bit of research, and found that Tiny got sold to CA, but Tiny codes were given to Kerio on the sly.
so next in the line, i'll try Kerio, and then i'll try Outpost and PC-Tools

thanx for your time, i'll post back with developments shortly.
hathehariken.

by: hatheharikenPosted on 2009-08-27 at 14:41:54ID: 25203015

well, kerio turned out to be a server monstrosity. out it went.
outpost crashed on reboot.

seems like pc-tools is left. i'll post back in a few hours.

pc tools does not give enough control to the user.

what i need is a simple rule based firewall, a rule matches, the packet is either allowed or blocked as per the rule, if there is no rule for the packet, the user is asked.
has all the simple software become extinct??

i'll post a few screenshots of my TSF so that you and others can understand what exactly i need.

thanx for your time,
hathehariken.

the problem is not solved.
since my old pc is not cooperating right now, i cant post the screenshots.
i dont see any point in keeping this thread open.

pankusareen, thank you for all the time you have devoted to this problem, i really appreciate it.

i will probable open another thread next week, when i get the old system up and running.
see you around!
