Please recommend a version to run on Windows XP

I have been trying to run snort on windows xp.  Nothing is working.  I have installed Snort 2.8.2.1 and WinPcap 3.1 running without success.  Any recommendations to get this to work?  I can switch over to linux, however it is become a challenge to get this to work on XP or 2003.
