The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

6.2

To switch DNS IP without network server down time.

Asked by Vartana in Cisco PIX Firewall

Tags: , , ,

Here is the situation I have.
Abc.com is currently pointing to 1.1.1.1 by a remote DNS server.
A watchgurad Firewall is pointing 1.1.1.1 to 192.168.3.10 which is abc.com server. The 3.10 server has a gateway of 192.168.3.1 for all internet traffic.

Now we need to change abc.com to point to 2.178.159.88 and must try to avoid any downtime due the change of IP in the DNS entry. There is also a new Cisco firewall that will handle all traffic for 2.178.159.88. The inside IP of the Cisco firewall is 192.168.3.2. Because 3.10 server has the gateway that uses the watchguard firewall 192.168.3.1, it does not know to redirect its traffic to the new Cisco firewall. As result, when the DNS server points its traffic 2.178.159.88, the traffic will go in by Cisco firewall but then go out by watchguard firewall. Then no traffic will establish between the user's computer and the server. I cannot just take off the old watchguard and replace Cisco ASA because DNS takes 24 hours to renew the entiries. I need to keep the old watchguard with its old IP up during that period of time.
We need to ensure that the DNS IP and firewall changes will not affect the business continuity of abc.com. Please let me know your solutions. Thank you very much.
