The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

ASA initial configuration

Asked by juggernaughty in Cisco PIX Firewall, Networking Hardware Firewalls

Tags: Cisco, ASA, 5505

Experts,

I am trying to configure an ASA 5505 for the first time in a home network. I am very new to Cisco, so please be verbose and patient :) . I will provide a quick description of the setup, followed by some numbered questions, and then the running config at the end of the post.

My basic setup has three VLANs called: DMZ, Inside, Outside. The picture posted is fairly accurate except that I have internal DNS servers on the inside interface and the public IP address is different.

I read that by default this device should allow (Inside) interface machines to access web pages but it is failing. I looked at the interfaces in the ASDM interface status windows and they say "LINK UP" and "LINE DOWN" for each of the interfaces.  I tried some basic "no shut" commands on the interface but I thought I'd ask the pros before i do any more damage.

1. What commands need to be issued so that I can have (Inside) and (DMZ) connections getting to the web and any other basic connectivity? Remember that I have DNS servers configured on the (Inside) VLAN only.

3. I have tried to enter some static NAT commands to allow SMTP connections to a server on the inside interface which were modified versions of a command from Batry Boy. Can you please verify if the access list and NAT commands were issued correctly to IP 192.168.1.44?

4. What domain name should I give to the device? Is this a windows domain or a DNS domain?

Thank you in advance for your support.
