The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

PIX 501 Remote Access VPN setup

Asked by th48ad in Cisco PIX Firewall, Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Networking Hardware Firewalls

Tags: Networking

Hello.  I am a newbie to EE and a novice to Cisco products so please bear with me.  I'm trying to set up a VPN so that people within my workplace can access our fileserver remotely using a Cisco VPN client.

I'm using a PIX 501 behind a Quest DSL Actiontek M1000 modem.  The DSL modem is forwarding the necessary ports to the PIX to establish VPN tunnels and Remote Desktop.

I've gotten as far as establishing a VPN session remotely but I just can't seem to access anything on the INSIDE interface of the firewall (fileserver, printers, workstations..). I may be using the wrong technique to access the fileserver??  (The IP address of our fileserver on the inside is static 192.168.0.221) After the VPN connection is established I go to "My network places" and type in \\192.168.0.221    but it eventually times out.

I have split tunneling enabled only temporarily so I can Remote Desktop into my computer at home and try to connect to the VPN from there; I will disable split tunneling later as I know it is a potential security risk.

I've attached I nice little network diagram so you can decipher my choppy verbal description of our network =)

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Here is my PIX 501 config:
