Question

Security audit failure

Asked by: jasonkk

I found below message from security event log.
Event message could not be found, but contained these strings: administrator, 64.168.127.161, 3, NtLmSsp , NTLM, UDUUCOM
It happened during early morning like 3:00AM and followed by all the users names not just administrator.
It lasted for 2 hours according security event log and I don't see any problem on the server.
We have Cisco 1720 router and using private IP,
Is this hacker attack? and is he hacked our system?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Where do you see those messages? Can you explain a little more on "followed by all the users" ?

Cheers,
Rajesh

by: jasonkkPosted on 2008-09-21 at 18:24:32ID: 22536738

It is from security event log
followed by all user means that login failure for all the users like below.
administrator, 64.168.***.*** NtLmSsp , NTLM, UDUUCOM
jsmith,64.168.***,***, NtLmSsp , NTLM, UDUUCOM
cindyl,64.168.***,***, NtLmSsp , NTLM, UDUUCOM

Do you have the event ids ?

Cheers,
Rajesh

by: jasonkkPosted on 2008-09-22 at 09:29:46ID: 22541479

Event ID is 529
I've set the Logon/Logoff audit enabled.

by: rsivanandanPosted on 2008-09-22 at 10:07:06ID: 22541863

Okay, these are failure audits and looks like a hack attempt. Is all the username coming from the same ip address? What is that ip address/workstation information?

It should be there in the event log.

Cheers,
Rajesh

But we are behind the NAT including the server.
How could it be possible?

by: rsivanandanPosted on 2008-09-22 at 19:39:23ID: 22546059

It could be various ways, having nat essentially doesn't mean it is protected. Do you have this ip addresses? as in my previous post? and does it make any sense to you? Let know.

Also, do you have any kind of services published?

Or even from internal to your lan, some spoofing might be happening for ip addresses to hide the track. Can you post one of those logs and paste it here completely?

Cheers,
Rajesh

1. Yes, we do have this IP but we don't use that IP.
2. What do you mean by publishing service?
3. I've checked all the PCs for virus but I couldn't find any viruses and how do I find log for spoofing?

by: rsivanandanPosted on 2008-09-23 at 09:45:25ID: 22551411

Point number 1 answers point number 3 - If you're not using that IP then somebody indeed is spoofing.

Point number 2 - Are there are services as in web server/email server that you're opening it to internet.

Now that we know it is spoofing, you need to take extra care of the situation. First check your perimeter firewall logs to see if you see any kind of activity like this.

If not, then it is internal.

Cheers,
Rajesh

by: jasonkkPosted on 2008-09-26 at 12:06:37ID: 22582660

Sorry for the late response,
If it is spoofing then I'd like to know which ports should be allowed for the server so that I can block unnecessary ports for hackers.
I'm using windows 2000 server as file & application server only.

Thanks

On the firewall allow nothing to come in except for the traffic which had gone out.

Rajesh

Could you give me the port number to allow and description?
I'm also considering to use software firewall on the server as well.

by: rsivanandanPosted on 2008-09-27 at 08:24:20ID: 22587454

There should no port number open at all in your firewall since you're not hosting anything. What is your firewall?

Cheers,
Rajesh
