Question

Cisco ASA 5505 factory reset - password problems

Asked by: kpturner

I have a Cisco 5505 which, for reasons I won't bore you with, I have had to do a factory reset on.  I did this from ASDM. When I did it, ASDM kindly asked me if I wanted the inside interface to remain at 10.2.0.3 (which is what I had configured it to anyway) rather than the default address on 192.168.1.1.  I accepted this option since it would mean that I could still see it on the LAN.  After the reboot, I went to https://10.2.0.3 and it prompted me for a user id and password.  The trouble is, it will not accept anything I try - not the user id and passwords I set up previously nor just blanks in both. I am completely stuffed.  I used to get to the CLI using putty but the device will not respond on port 22 anymore. I can ping it successfully on 10.2.0.3 but I cannot telnet to it.  What can I do (other than throw it out of the window and buy another one)?

Thanks in advance.

Use a console cable for serial interaction.  9600 8 none 1 xon/xoff

Password should be cisco or Cisco

I have a backup of my original config that I really want to restore later on. However, before doing so, I want to get the original factory configuration back and save it also.   I have zero chance of configuring it from a CLI because I am not familiar with the commands - I just want to get into ASDM in the default factory config.

If I use the console cable and use "ena" "password Cisco" will I then be able to use ASDM or are there more commands required first?

When I start up the console it wants me to log in - which takes me back to my original problem. I don't know the user id and/or password. A blank user name and with a password of "Cisco" or "cisco" doesn't work unfortunately, and nor does leaving both blank.  Eventually I managed to reset the password (which worked in ASDM with a blank user id) by following this:

Thanks for you help though.
