The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

LAN traffic with different return route...can ping but that's it.

Asked by ITDharam in Networking Hardware Firewalls, Network Switches & Hubs, Cisco PIX Firewall

I doing some work for a company that is doing a gradual migration to a new ISP.  To facilitate this we installed an additional router.  Since all the LAN traffic points to the core switch, and the core switch default route is the PIX, and the PIX can only point to one gateway, I instead installed the new router (with full FW capabilities) on their local network.  To get devices to use it (since I have multiple VLANs and I couldn't configure the new router with an interface in each VLAN) I use PBR on the core switch to change the next hop to the new router.

This works fine.

Now I'm trying to migrate servers in their DMZ and right now the approach I'm taking is to plug in a secondary interface on the new router, into the DMZ switch.  So there are two 'gateways' for the DMZ, the PIX (old) and the HP (new).

My test workstation which is pointed to the HP using PBR, can access devices in the DMZ that have their gateway set to the HP.  However, my workstation has problems connecting to devices on the DMZ that are configured to point to the PIX.  I can ping these devices fine, and they can ping me, but I can't do anything else.  (At first I could ping them, but they couldn't ping me, and I found that I had to set the firewall rule to 'stateless' and then they could ping me)

I know this is vague, and if I need to provide more detail I will, but I'm really just hoping for a reality check.  From what I remember, there is no inherent problem in having a return route different from the sent route.

(One thing that confused me is that the PBR says that if you match this address, would it change the next hop address if the return traffic destination is that address?)  I tried to use an extended ACL with PBR, but it seemed to cause problems, so I'm just using a basic ACL (On Catalyst 6509)
