Was having this exact problem on a Win98 machine and just got it fixed last night.  After running MSCONFIG I checked Selective Startup and unchecked all the boxes.  Then I re-booted and ran Live Update and it was able to process all the updates successfully including the redirector.
Also, there is a lengthy thread on the forums at DSLreports.com dealing with this same issue and there is a guy from Symantec who is asking people to send him the logs and he's working on solutions for them.

Hope this helps.

I now have the same problem with a WinXP SP2 with LU1806 Live Update not able to install program updates to Symantec Redirector followed by LU1812 A program that was part of this update failed when it ran.  update not applied.  One consequence is that I cannot go to any https site.  I am running Norton sysem works 2002 and norton personal firewall 2002.  I have tried everything.  WHen I try to remove the norton firewall, I get the message that I have to have "supervisor" privileges (Ihave administrator XP privileges) and I cannot remove the application.   I also cannot restore to any previous date I select.  I have tried starting in Safe mode, but cannot figure out a way to do that and also get the Update  to work, since Internet access is not available.  ANY suggestions appreciated.  I really do not want to rebuild the machine.
Even if I upgrade to Norton 2005, will thatoverwrite/remove the old Norton??

How can I find the patch?  the XP SP2 system will not let me into https (I am on a different W2k System that will) so if I try TOols Windows Update and look for express or custom updates, I get "the website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are rtying to view.  I would gladly call MS if I could get somewhere.  they keep sending me to online sites that are secure.
how would I download the patch to a this W2000 system and then thumbdrive it over to repair the XP SP2 one?

really a bother.  I have been all day at this.
