Free Firewall for Win98 NOT Win98SE?

I need a firewall for my Win98. Note I have already tried Zone Alert . It clogged up my PC. I'm running DSL. Is there a free download?

You mean zone alarm?
I am using it on an old 233mmx laptop and it works fine

Yes, I meant Zone Alert. I can find plenty of firewalls that indicate Win 98, but I need to know if you have any direct knowledge of them working OK on Win98. Some will say Win98 and mean Win98SE. I have had to uninstall too many programs because of that.

Windows98 should work with any firewall... it shouldn;t create any problems with any of them!
i persoanlly have used Norton and Mcafee firewalls on Win98 and never had any problem!
But you said freeware... so there are two best freeware Zone Alarm and Sygate
Zone Alarm is not working for you..... so try Sygate now! :)

Read here about the System Requirements of Sygate Personal Firewall.... it CAN work on Win98 >> http://smb.sygate.com/products/pspf/pspf_ov.htm
If its not working on yours.... then there must be some other problem going on..... we have to work on that problem! :-?

I loaded Sygate. It seems to be OK except my PC will not go into Standby. It is a Compaq 5140. Any Ideas?

what happens when you manually try to put it in standby?
and if you disable sygate.... does the system go to standby easily?

When I disable Sygate, Standby works OK. When Sygate is enabled, Standby will not work manually or otherwise.
