The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cisco PIX 501 with VPN and Port Forwarding

At my office we had a lower level router (Xincom) in place that allowed us to establish a VPN tunnel to our branch office (on another Xincom) and also have port forwarding from our single public IP.  Our consultant is in the process of replacing the pair of Xincom routers with a pair of Cisco PIX 501.  After much wrangling he has concluded that we need another public IP address.  He believes that we cannot establish a VPN on the same public IP that we perform incoming port forwarding on.

If that is not entirely clear let me spell it out a little more...

Devices:
router 1 (at location 1)
router 2 (at location 2)
Server 1 (at location 1)
Server 2 (at location 1)

A VPN tunnel built between the two routers.
Incoming traffic that hits router 1 on port 80 should be forwarded to server1
Incoming traffic that hits router 1 on port 3389 should be forwarded to server2

With our old Xincom routers we needed only one public IP address for router 1.
Our consultant is claiming that with the PIX firewalls, we now need one public IP for the tunnel and one for the incoming traffic.
Is this true?

Ultimately I will get the second address, I just need to know for other reasons if this is true.
Since this seems to be oriented towards someone with Cisco certification I am awarding the highest points.
