Hi!
I'm looking for a way to prevent software installed on my computer from accessing the Internet unless I specifically allow it. I have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed and have tried to configure it to always ask when a program attempts to access the net. What I noticed was that there are "modules" that seem to be accessing the net using Firefox, IE7 and others - e.g. Thunderbird. The message I get is (for example):
Thunderbird is attempting to access the Internet using one or more unrecognized modules.
From what I can tell, most of these "modules" are .dll files.
I don't recognize most of them although they are probably legitimate apps or processes used by Windows, but some of them (e.g. TortoiseCVS, Logitech) have no reason to access the net. When I block these "modules" I usually end up not being able to access the Internet at all. How can I prevent this?
Also, there are some programs that require access to the net - e.g. TortoiseCVS and FTP clients including Dreamweaver or FrontPage. I would need these to be able to have normal access as required but prevent them from sending personal and usage data, etc.
Hope this makes sense.
