firewall? Bot program?  What Can  do to keep my internet from slowing down?

It appears that when I run Spybot every 2 hours, the internet performance "unclogs".  Maybe this is my imagination, but I'll get like 15 bot programs (e.g. DoubleClick, Right Media, etc.)  I recently did a totally fresh install of EVERYTHING.  I have not visited any questionalbe sites, so I'm confused why I'm getting so many things tha APPEAR to slow me down.  So....

1) Is this appearance of being slowed down just my imagination?  
2)  When I run Spybot and "fix the selected problems", things seem to go faster.  Is this my imagination?
3)  Do I need a firewall?  If so, are there any free ones like AVG, Spybot? that work effedtively?
