Browse All Topicsi found the easiest method to upgrading a Fortigate device at my site, was to only click the Upgrade button and double click the patch in the browse menu.
But my senior was not happy with me doing that, he wanted to do the upgrade through the CLI mode using a tftp server. when I asked him the reason for that, he said, once when he did it through the GUI mode, the device flaked out.
He couldnt explain me the reason why that happened.

Hi harpreetonline,
Upgrading through CLI using a TFTP server guarantees you to avoid configuration problems, as the boot device is formatted during the procedure.
If a Firmware is updated through GUI, and the gap between the versions is high, chances are that the fortigate won t boot well because syntaxis of configuration key words will be different.
And you would still have configuration problems if you decide to upgrade the firmware and restore your old config file.
However, upgrading through GUI would be the easier/best way if the firmware version gap is short.
You can have a look to the changelog PDFs. It clearly states if the firmware update from your actual version is risky or not.
Hope this will help you.
Regards,
xiwanm
