Question

Squid Proxy - How To Configure IP/MAC Restrictions

Asked by: coppsbuildall

Hi,

So I already have squid setup and running ... seems to be working very well. However I would like to be able to add a second set of filters that are based on IP to only allow the following sites (http://intranet, http://abc.com, etc.).

I currently have a whitelist with the first set of allowed websites and a rule to allow the whitelist and then a deny all.

I am not sure how to proceed from here as this is a very basic configuration.

Thanks,
Ryan

Have a look here.
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-setup-transparent-proxy-squid-howto.html

Also, if this looks too complicated for you, then you might consider using something like endian firewall where squid has a very nice and easy UI that allows you to specify sites and IP to block/allow amongst many other security and reporting features. www.endian.it

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-18 at 11:45:48ID: 25126228

psimation: squid = free, endian = not free.

I have rules in place for a basic config allowing a specific list of sites, what I am trying to accomplish is add a second group of computer to filter the rest of my traffic through so I can block what I need to. I will try and locate a Squid manual and will start reading from the beginning.

Thanks for the suggestions.

endian = free - just follow the community download link from homepage or follow here: http://www.endian.com/en/community/download/

thanks ... will check it out. But I am using Squid already and would like to stay with it. If I create a second listening port and direct users to different ports how can I setup different ACL's for each port to be used?

#Sales Staff
http_port 3128
#Non Restrictive
http_port 3129
#
#3128
Block all traffic except for list of webs
#
#3129
Block only the following sites ... allow everything else.

I can force the cleints through GPO for port control ... but I need to configure Squid to work this way.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think the easiest for You would be running two squids on different ports.

But if You need to stay with one instance only, try following pattern

acl non_restrictive myport 3129
acl yes_restrictive myport 3128

http_access ....

http_access allow yes_restrictive sales_allowed_webs
http_access deny yes_restrictive
http_access allow non_restrictive !sales_allowed_webs
http_access deny non_restrictive

i have no problems running two instances ... i actually think that would be a better idea ... because I already have configs for what i want to do in two files. how do i configure squid to launch twice when booting and tell it to read the different configs?

by: ravenplPosted on 2009-08-21 at 11:48:11ID: 25154640

What distribution? For redhat-like create new /etc/init.d/squid2 as a copy of /etc/init.d/squid2 and change the configFile path
hint: squid takes -f configFile option
also read http://wiki.squid-cache.org/MultipleInstances to not miss any config variable that should be different between instances.

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-21 at 12:17:48ID: 25154903

I am using Mandriva ... so I have made a copy of squid ... and called it squid 2 ... is it in this file that I need to configure it to look at the config files? I made some changes but it seems to fail when trying to launch. Is there somewhere else I need to modify?

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-21 at 13:41:22ID: 25155621

I am still getting an error when trying to launch (on boot):

Executing /etc/rc.d/init.d/squid status ..

squid is stopped
FATAL: Unable to open configuration file: /etc/squid/squid.conf: (2) No such file or directory
Squid Cache (Version 3.0.STABLE1): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage: 0.007 seconds = 0.000 user + 0.007 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 0

However, I am not using squid.conf ... it is either squid-allothers.conf or squid-sales.conf ... I cant find where this is being referenced.

by: duncan_roePosted on 2009-08-22 at 03:17:22ID: 25158111

It looks like neither is being referenced but instead Squid is trying to open /etc/squid/squid.conf. You could try making a symbolic link:

cd /etc/squid
ln -s squid-allothers.conf squid.conf

But that's not why I am posting really. In regard to your original Q: "I would like to be able to add a second set of filters that are based on IP", have you condsidered using IPTABLES?
IPTABLES is a part of Linux, and you could deploy rules for connections to port 80 (or whatever port you have Squid listening on). From the man page (i.e. typing "man iptables" in a command window):

"Iptables  is  used  to set up, maintain, and inspect the tables of IP packet filter rules in the Linux kernel.  Several different tables may be defined.  Each table contains a number of built-in chains and may also contain user-defined chains.

If you would like to post a few simple requirements, I will see if I can script them for you

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-24 at 04:05:48ID: 25167149

Hi duncan_roe,

I will post sample requirements later today when I can sit down with this for a few minutes.

Thanks,
Ryan

OK - but I'll be out of town for a few days after tomorrow afternoon (approx 18 hs time)

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-25 at 13:42:15ID: 25182032

simple requirements

#if request received on 3128 use following directives.
- allow specific list of sites - abc.com red.com google.com ... there are more but you get the picture
- deny all other sites
- on error send them to a preconfigured page telling them their request was denied

#if request received on 8213 use following directives.
- block the following list - facebook.com partypoker.net ... etc ...
- allow all other sites
- on error send them to a preconfigured page telling them their request was denied

by: duncan_roePosted on 2009-08-26 at 01:52:37ID: 25185473

IPTABLES  can block / accept connections as you require. But it works at a too low a level to be able to contemplate sending back a page. The web servwe would not even see the connection attempts.
(working through remote webmail interface - can't post sample scripts until I get home on Saturday - sorry).
The remote browser will just think there is no server at your address and report to the user appropriately. Would that be enough?

by: coppsbuildallPosted on 2009-08-26 at 05:22:43ID: 25186746

I suppose that would be acceptable ... they will then know if nothing happens or if they get an error that the page is unavailable.

by: duncan_roePosted on 2009-08-29 at 04:07:37ID: 25213702

Rules are below. "man iptables" says :

"(please note that specifying any name to be resolved with a remote query such as DNS is a really bad idea)

so I pre-resolved them using "dig" e.g.:

19:53:58$ dig abc.com|grep -A2 "ANSWER SECTION"
;; ANSWER SECTION:
abc.com.                743     IN      A       199.181.132.250

similarly red.com is 67.192.42.156. google.com showed 2 addresses with the above command. Simply typing "dig google.com" revealed there were in fact 3 addresses: 74.125.67.100, 74.125.127.100 & 74.125.45.100

Did you really mean "if abc.com calls me on port 3128 then accept the call"? That's how I read your requirement and that's what I've implemented. Post if you wanted something else.

Similarly to above, facebook.com has 3 addresses: 69.63.176.140, 69.63.178.11 & 69.63.184.142. partypoker.net only resolves to 88.81.155.144.

The code snippet below shows installed rules after dorring the attached file (which is a list of iptables commands). You miht like to substitute /usr/sbin/iptables for iptables before merging the lines int an rc script. Please post if you have any questions
