Question

XP firewall turns itself off every reboot, but can be started without error

Asked by: eMicros

Hi

I completed a fresh installation of XP which failed to install everything due to a fault with the cd drive.  I repalced the cd drive and did a repair install as I had spent ages copying data to it and installing drivers etc.  It came back up and all is working fine except for the firewall.  It states that xp firewall is turned off.  Ilook at services.msc and it is set to automatic, but it is "stopped".  I press the start button and lo and behold it starts. But when i restart the laptop, its off again. There is no other security solution installed other than AVG free (no firewall).

Can somebody help me track down why this won't auto start, it starts fine when i press "start" in the mmc.

One final thing, the service name shows as "Shared Access" when looking at the windows firewall / ics service in services mmc. Not sure if this is correct? Suspect it is just jnot noticed it before.

If i have to, i'll just wipe and rebuild again but if theres a quick fix I'd much rather do that and save a few hours :)

Dear,

The name of the services is : Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

Open the Services console, and ensure that the following are set to Automatic and are Started:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Network Connections
Event Log
Windows Management Instrumentation

Best Regards

Check the event log on the PC (assuming the service is starting ok!) - look through the entries around the time of startup, and see if you get any errors or anything pertaining to this service. Post back any findings... :)

MadShiva : These were all started already, except RPC which was manual and not started. I've set to auto and rebooted, still firewall says its turned off. If i go into services mmc, and click start, it comes on without any error so all dependencies are fine. Also, the service description is Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), but the service NAME is actually SharedAccess, just as Wired Autoconfig service is called dot3svc.  Its a red herring, i shouldnt have mentioned it.

PeteJThomas : actually, there is an error in the log.

"The wndows firewall etc serviceterminated with the following error: the class is configured to run as a security id different from the caller"

Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892199

Move down to the 'Resolution' section, and I would probably advise using Method 2, though it's entirely down to your preference.

If you're unsure of anything in the instructions, just say so and we'll go through it bit by bit... :)

I guess the key difference there is that in the MS KB they actually can't start the service, even manually. Worth a shot though!

Try using this method to reinstall the firewall:

Open a command prompt, and run these one after the other:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

netsh firewall reset

Then just close the cmd window, open control panel, and open Windows firewall. Let it start the service, and configure etc. (from http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-to-remove-firewall-included-in-windows-xp/) Then restart and see what happens?

Failing that, have you considered installing an SP? Or do you have already have SP3 installed?

Thanks for continuing to help. I tried that, no good. I tried deleting service and reinstalling service, still no good. It will run if i manually start it, but it wont auto start. spent too long on it already, will just do a fesh install of xp again.

Thanks for your help, I'll give you some points for the solutions above because they're a good find and are sure to help somebody

Thanks for the points, sorry nothing actually resolved your issue... You'd probably find there are several underlying issues due to the problems you had, so a reinstall at this point is probably the best course of action anyway... :)

I'm pretty sure you're right Pete. I was looking for a quick fix somewhat hopefully, and the steps you've pointed out look like they should have an effect, and as they don't, i think a rebuild is the sensible option. It was a new install anyway, worth a punt for a quick fix :)

Thanks for your help
