I guess it can't be done with the Comcast router itself. If you "turn it in to a modem" where to you put the static IP address? The Cisco and if so what are the wan settings on the COmcast router?
Main Topics
Browse All Topics Does Comcast suck or what? Comcast is providing some type of SMC modem/router with their internet service. I forget the exact model. Two questions:
1) Is there any way to turn it in to Bridge Mode?
2) How to you get Microsoft VPN to work with it? PPTP is not a pre-defined service, GRE is not an option, PPTP pass through is no where to be seen, it is a total piece of junk. You can port forward port 1723 to get the PPTP but it does not include GRE and there is no way to to define GRE. You only have two protocl options on port forwarding. TCP or UDP. Absolutely no pre-defined services.
Anyone had any luck getting Microsoft VPN to work with these pieces of crap?

OK, so I've got "Disable Firewall for True Static IP Subnet Only" configured on the Firewall portion of the SMC Box. Beyond this, I have no configuration settings specified on the SMC. The WAN IP Address is automatically picked up by the box (what was given to me as the Default Gateway IP) when I look at the "Gateway Summary" page on the SMC. 1-to1 NAT is also disabled on the SMC, in the firewall section.
From there, I have a cable from Port 1 of the SMC to my WAN port on the ASA5505. Not sure if it matters which port I use on the SMC.
HTH.

Mine works great. I have it essentially kicked back to a Cable Modem, with all traffic being allowed through it, no firewall enabled.
Then, I've had a WatchGuard FireBox on the inside as a firewall, recently replaced with a Cisco ASA5505. I have also seen other offices with Belkin, Linksys, etc.
Of course, once the Comcast SMC has been relegated to just a "dumb modem", the real firewall can be setup to allow GRE, PPTP, whatever works for your need.
