The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to clean Win32/Sality Virus. Urgently need help!!!

Tags: virus
I have 2 antivirus softwares, Norton AV and AVG free software. When I try to access an execution file stored in my server which installed with Norton Antivirus software, my AVG antivirus software detect "threat detected Virus found Win32/Sality ". Norton AV didn't detect any.

My AVG can only detect but cannot clean or remove the virus. I thought Norton AV is a powerful software.
The only reason may be it was not uptodate BUT I doublecheck and found that it was configured with auto update.

So my problem is how to remove/repair/ or clean the virus. 2nd is I just want to know why Norton didn't detect any ?

Please helpme.
Thanks.

Greetings, KG1973 !

Win32/Sality is known virus and should be detected by Norton AV.  It could be that AVG detected a false positive.

1. First issue you have is that you have 2 antivirus programs running in active move at the same time?  The two AV programs will conflict with each other.  Temporarily disable both active scans.

2. Run a manual scan of NAV on the exectable file. Do you find the Win32/Sality virus?

Run a manual scan of AVG on the exectable file. Do you find the Win32/Sality virus?

3. If you get a positive with one antivirus, and not the other, check with a third AV scanner to see which is correct.

Housecall Online Scan
http://housecall.antivirus.com
or
Panda Activescan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
or
Kaspersky Virus Scan
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

4. If you have the virus and need to remove it, here is Norton method of removal

You need to disable System Restore and delete in Safe Mode.

That's what I tought too. But we also have few pc with individual antvirus software and I already tested it with AVG or Norton. Only AVG can detect that virus. Other pc is ok, as if there is no virus at all.

KG1973,

Did you try the manual removal of the virus?
http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.hllp.sality.html

If you do not find any trace of the files and keys indicated in the link, then the virus is gone or was never there.

Sorry war1,

I am still working on it. The virus is gone, but I don't know how. We disable AVG AV software. Even the virus is gone, but still the user can't access the execution file from the server. Then I changed their privileges as poweruser, which somehow permit them to access.

I'm confused and I am not sure whether this has something to do with virus or not. Enduser should not be given such poweruser account due to security reason but at this time I don't have much choice.

kG1973,

The virus warning could be a false positive or the virus was in the System Restore folder.  The virus file may have been replaced by new System Restore points.
