Can a home router be infected with virus/trojan, etc?

Hi

I am about to help someone who I suspect has a bad virus infection - they have no antivirus, etc.

I am going to try installing some AV software but need to get on the net to update - can my home router be infected with something that may be infecting the PC? I don't want to risk my other computers when reattaching the cables to the network.............
