It's a Virut and depending how long the system has been infected my suggestion would be to just reformat the system and start again.

If it's really Virut, it's a buggy file infector in which antivirus and other scanners can't cure the file properly so the infected files ended up getting deleted or corrupted and the user would have to reinstall every infected files or programs.

You can also try DrWebCureIt, it's a good scanner for this but like I've said you would have to reinstall those files that have been corrupted or deleted.

Try to use Kaspersky Rescue CD .... download latest updates from Kasper website or get the distribution folder from anyone of ur friends who has kaspersky Internet security or antivirus installed.

When you download the updates, copy them to Mem stick insert the mem stick and after burning a bootable Kaspersky rescue disk ... you will restart and find the Mem stick shown in my computer..

You will be able then to update Kasper's definitions from the mem stick and continue a full computer scan.

New variant of Virut also propigates to USB and other writable removable media (it happened to me) by infecting the autorun.inf and any .exe, .htm, .php and .asp files it finds.

Remove infected PC's from your network (kind of a no-brainer)

Recommend using CD media to update antivirus signatures.  PC's without File Sharing enabled also were infected but it is uncertain if the Admin Shares were exploited or if users had opened infected files before we could get to them.

This virus also infects protected windows files like explorer.exe and ctfmon.exe which cannot be cleaned even in Safe Mode.  Extract the hard drive and scan from an updated and known clean PC with AutoRun disabled.  USB2.0 to IDE/SATA external drive kits were real handy. (Also works great to remove Rootkits, since clean PC is not affected by the rootkit hiding files from the API)

We have had success cleaning with McAfee's DAT5520 released 2/8/09.

Virut infects, all executable files, .scr files, .rar or .zip archives, and the new variants infects htm and html files.
Depending on how long virut has been on the system, it is really a waste of time cleaning it if it's been in the system for a while and many files have been infected.
Virus infected files can not be cleaned.
I hate to say but a reformat is the solution when virut is involved.

> Virus infected files can not be cleaned.

Well, at least Microsoft Windows OneCare worked for me. It CLEANED all my exe and scr files, without problems. Well, I've tried cleaning from clean system. Those virtut cleaner programs does not work for these new variants.

I'm not fan of Microsoft AV products, but OneCare worked for this, and that was really important for me.

Today I ran tests with Norton AntiVirus, from clean system. And it seems it would clean files just fine (you MUST do it from clean system! Running inside infected one would give funny results. Like Norton 'clears' all files and would tell that everything is fine... But all files are infected anyway!)

Cleaning with Norton or OneCare does not return files to exact state before infection, and it seems that infection+cleaning will left some 'signatures' that would trigger some other AV programs.
I'm not sure if you can call these as 'false-positive', but my system seems to be running just fine, without problems. (Now I have also outgoing firewall, so I can see if there is unknown traffic from my system).

>>>Well, at least Microsoft Windows OneCare worked for me. It CLEANED all my exe and scr files, without problems

Then you were not dealing with Virut file infector if the infected files were cleaned and still in working order.

>>>Cleaning with Norton or OneCare does not return files to exact state before infection

There you go.... virut infected files can not be cleaned properly.
When I said virut-infected files can't be cleaned, I mean every scanner can not clean the infected file properly because of how buggy virut has been programmed so the files will end up being corrupted or being deleted by antivirus or any scanners which then result in many programs not working unless those corrupted/deleted files will be replaced.

Removal Tool from Symantec :-

http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-020411-2802-99&tabid=1

Direct Download Link :-

http://www.symantec.com/content/en/us/global/removal_tool/threat_writeups/FixVirut.com

Currently, I am testing this to see if it works.

Also, there is a removal tool released from Kaspersky ( http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/ ) which does disinfect the file, if Symantec ( local install ) doesn't have it Quarantined yet. In that case, you need to restore from Quarantine, disable File System Auto-Protect ( at your own risk ) and then scan and disinfect the infected files by using this tool. NOTE : Ensure all scanning and cleaning activities are performed completely offline.

Best of luck !!!
