Question

Is Kaspersky Internet Security suppose to slow down your PC?

Asked by: reign80

Just bought this anti-virus program last week and I noticed that when it is running, it seems that my computer becomes very slow and the internet is laggy.

I click on a site and it does not open up immediately, it takes 5 second or more for it to open up.

Is there anything I can configure to make my computer internet runs smoother when Kaspersky is on?

Thanks.

Any antivirus will place an additional load on a computer. Kapersky has a tendency to grab resources and on an older machine this can be quite noticible in terms of a time lag or latency.

If you had an antivirus package previously, make sure it is completely uninstalled as there can be conflicts.

I have used Kaspersky in the past and it is a great program when it comes to preventing virus' and spyware. However, to the average user there are way too many options to configure. Kaspersky is also known to conflict with a lot of other programs out there which can be quite annoying.

First, what type of computer are you running? What are the system specifications? In other words, what type of CPU do you have? How much system RAM? What operating system are you running?

Hi,

Here are the info you are looking for...

Computer: Toshiba Satellite (bought it back in 2002)
Pentium 4 CPU 1.60GHz
512 MB RAM

Window XP Home Edition Version 2002
Service Pack 3

reign80: I am going to be very honest with you and please don't take it the wrong way. Your computer is outdated and is the main reason that Kaspersky is lagging your computer down. As Mike_Carroll pointed out any security application is going to slow down your computer; however, a low end computer like yours is going to make it even worse.

Below is taken from Kaspersky's website:

Hardware and Software Requirements:
Windows XP: Intel Pentium 800 MHz or higher (or compatible CPU) and 256 MB available RAM
Windows Vista: Intel Pentium 800 MHz 32 bit (x86)/64 bit (x64) or higher (or compatible CPU) and 512 MB available RAM.

Technically, your computer meets the minimum requirements to run their program; however, company's like to do this to lure users into buying their software. Technically your computer can run Kaspersky Internet Security, but they don't specify that it won't run efficiently.

I am a huge fan of PC Tools Internet Security 2009. Your computer won't be able to run that either so I am not going to suggest you to get that either. Although I can't stand Norton products, I am currently testing out Norton Internet Security 2009 on my old Dell Latitude D810 laptop. It surprisingly takes up virtually no system resources. It is very light and quiet and I am actually pleased for once.

I am not sure if you can return Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 or not to get your money back. If you bought it directly from their website all you have to do is contact their support team and they will disable your license key and give your money back. I can tell you from a lot of experience that Kaspersky Internet Security is not the right fit for your low end computer.

I hope I am of some help here, and if you still have further questions let me know.

Thanks..I'm going to upgrade to a new computer and I'll contact Kaspersky and see if I can use the same disk on my new PC.

Thanks again for all the info.

If you do upgrade to a new computer you will able to install Kaspersky Internet Security on another computer. The license key allows you to install Kaspersky Internet Security on up to 3 computers.
