In an attempt to try to troubleshoot a problem with a Dell desktop running XP Pro SP2 which has missing desktop icons, I tried to execute ComboFix within Safe Mode. Unfortunately, when I tried to execute ComboFix, I got the following message: !!Alert!! It is not safe to continue. The contents of the ComboFix package has been compromised. Hi There;
Thank you so much for your prompt reply to this question. Due to the large number of application errors, missing desktop icons and taskbar, and non-responsiveness found within both Safe and Normal Mode, I believe it is time to consider backing up the end user files, format the harddrive, and reload XP along with any necessary drivers and applications. At this point, I am still working out the logistics of carrying out the end user data backup. Due to the tricky nature of this situation, I will need to employ a third part utility to carry out this goal.
In closing, thanks again for your help. I will be back in touch soon on the other related post currently open as soon as I fgure out which utility will work best for the end user data backup.

Virut is very hard to come back from. See my question here:

Best bet is to run an online scan with Kaspersky:
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk
If it finds a large number of virut infected files, it is time for a format and re-install...
