Administrator password for XP

When booting the PC I get the following error message:

"ISASS.EXE
when trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct"

If i try to enter the recovery consule i get to the part where you select the windows installation and then enter the password, but it tells me the admin password that i enter is wrong. It is not!

where do I go from here?

If there is nothing that can be done can I load XP onto another harddisk and then interogate the first to recovery the data?

<pardons> C'mon, 0byte, you should know better than that by now.
You know, if you all keep insisting on ignoring Microsoft tools, the use of Operating System techniques, the utilization of good Administrator practices, then I shall not be one who offers up any support such as recommending objectivity, trust, open-mindedness.
(if the prior participants do not change their EE usage habits, then I recommend deleting their accounts and this proposed question as well, and limiting their access accordingly, in measure appropriate to infraction)

Do Duly note: Experts-Exchange is a support site for honorable peoples. It is not a "cracker" site. Heed.
Hello,

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Q322389 How to Obtain the Latest Windows XP Service Pack

To resolve this problem, reinstall Windows XP using the Recovery CD provided by your computer manufacturer or the installation source provided by your administrator, and do not turn off the computer or restart it during the Wizard. If your computer automatically restarts during the Wizard, contact your computer manufacturer or administrator for help to resolve this problem.

see the way that Microsoft recomend to deal with this problem.

Still I think that you didn't even run a google search. This is the second link returned in the newsgroup search.

SunBow,

What habit do I have to reconsider myself ?
I'm not posting links to warez or pirated stuff.
There are all valid tools that have their benefits. There are others that you can have not for free.

I still consider that reseting the Admin password has the same result as reinstalling the OS or at least worth trying (since we are posting here not answers but comments).

And yes nobody's comment (not on this thread not on all Expert-Exchange site) used links or recomended about pirated material.

The way that you consider a floppy used to reset the Admin password as being a cracker tool well I don't see it that way.

Umm SunBow just so you know EE has Ok'd posting the links to the tools that have been mentioned in this question. There was a debate about it in CS a few months ago and EE gave the Ok to recommend these tools.

Besides it is no different then finding a way to delete the SAM file altogether.
Hello,
I have frequently noticed SunBow protest the sharing of knowledge about hacking, especially if the question implies unethical activity. In reality only through the spread of such information can consumers influence progressive change in security.

Not only do you seem to support ignorance of security flaws, but advocate adherence to M$ recommendations in all cases regardless of weather in reality the recommendations are self serving & cost more to the end user.

-M$ cannot state that a boot diskette will reset the Administrator password within 1-2 minutes because it directly contradicts marketing statements & other claims they’ve made in the past about EFS & registry security. I am sure they are quite aware of this problem and its implications...

ERD Commander allows you to boot straight from CD avoiding activating the HDD. There is an untility to change the password of any user with knowing their password! Extremely good!

For that price it better be useful. :>)

Given "CrazyOne: Umm SunBow just so you know EE has Ok'd posting" :

I recommend Mod not consider any SunBow comment as having any value, since I missed the staff meetings at EE when the doors were opened to publishing

Housenet> I have frequently noticed SunBow protest the sharing of knowledge about hacking, especially if the question implies unethical activity. In reality only through the spread of such information can consumers influence progressive change in security.

I do not disagree with the latter. If you'd seen other threads, the more experienced mods could validate I side more on freedom of information that about anybody. For example, I do not like deletions of "bad" questions, for then we'd still have to keep guessing on what it is that makes it bad in the first place. However, given the amounts of certain questions of alien kind, and threats levelled, I've indeed drawn a tighter line here. The asker should give more appearance of stability and knowledge of managing a system before being handed too many tricks that may misfire when not used properly. Unless one is eager for additional problem questions to be raised in the forum. A new ID asking only "help me hack passwords" is no more indicative of sysadmin knowledge than that of one in elementary school trying to get at the grading system for fun. especially so when another new id asks same question in another TA with only a word or two changed.

Mishou> The way that you consider a floppy used to reset the Admin password as being a cracker tool well I don't see it that way

A solid networking setup for sure should follow rule of physical security. But in a cheaper setup you could have a teacher working with a child, then having to leave for some reason, trusting the child, who may have some floppy trick learned about on internet. Those who are curious, will continue to act and behave with curiousity, whether a grade change is needed or not. May a similar 'trick' had been used on a mollydaisy machine. Tricks are fun, let's have a good laugh.

But why do so many comments say use third party tools, and hack passwords, and do partitions, when the operating system itself has tools worth using that have not been tried?

And this Q in particular, was not about the large number of people forgetting a password to a major system. It was that for some reason, that the proper password was not working. This indicates damage, that no crackerjack tool I know of can fix. the person was asking to help fix the system, not to find out the passwords of everyone on their system.

A recent security question was raised on determining what rules and guidelines we should follow. I was there. Too bad the rest here above did not participate, to clue us on which information and links are sponsored by experts-exchange, and which are not. Our loss.

While I'd forgotten about this thread (I think there were three separate ones at the time, similar subject) and had to do something else and lost my response in trying to be more apologetic and even award side points to some of the comments I thought deserving (since I assumed the asker would not); at this date all I can think of to say is that I admit that I remain a minority, and you exploiter-helpers can decide again which of you can accumulate points by mere repetitious posts of links.

With additional comments from mollydaisy lacking, at least I have less a problem with my approach than you do, it supports my position.
when trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct"

Not to complain, but resetting the password is only part of the problem that you all focus on.  Resetting passwords, - no prob -  Fixing the error message requires reinstalling XP.  Consider - Many PC's do not include an oem install disk, but just have a recovery partition, usually setup to reformat and reinstall.   What a lovely solution to a machine which has had 5 hrs worth of patchs, software installations, configuratins and modifications.  Now we have a grumpy user.   Who can come up with a solution to the main parat of the question.  The infinate error message followed by a reboot.......

Please don't get off track with hacking discussions, security issues, encryption, politics or religion, but stay focused on the problem.
Has anyone gotten a solution without a complete reinstall???????

Tanks  ôô
A complete solution to repairing the second part of this problem (when trying to update a password, this return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct), without reinstalling or losing settings, is available here:

http://www.creativemac.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=8658&afterinter=true

This can also be made easier by using the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows, if your not comfortable with the command line. This tool is available here:
