Windows XP password screen saver inconsistant

Hello,

I need to have the windows screen saver activate with a login screen after 10 minutes on Windows XP SP2.  I know how to go in the display settings and set the sceen saver to 10 minutes and on resume use password.  This has proven to be unreliable on this machine.  We set it to 10 minutes and walk away for 30 and come back and we still see the desktop.  Is there a more reliable way to have the machine lock itself after a period of inactivity?

I am assigning a lot of points as this is important to me.

Thank you

Hello MickaelE =)

Have you read here yet ??

How To Force Users to Quit Programs and Log Off After a Period of Inactivity in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q314999
Or read this,

How can I auto logoff or automatically log a user out of Windows after a period of inactivity?

A:  This can be done in Windows 2000 / XP / .NET using Group Policy. Control Panel, Administrative Tools > local security policy > local policies \ security options \ "Automatically log off users" and/or "Amount of idle time required before disconnecting session"

Use the winexit.scr screensaver winexit.scr lives in the (Windows 2000 server resource kit)

Using winexit.scr

add Winexit.scr to the registry

http://www.tburke.net/info/reskittools/topics/winexit.htm

Deploy it on a machine (Says Windows XP but works in W2K)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;314999&

You can set it in the Domain Security policy here's a walkthrough

Hi Mike,

You can also try this program -> http://www.dmvsoft.com/a_screenlock.htm
Not free but I'm sure it does the job for you. Try the trial version. :)

Hello,

What I do not want to do is have them exit their software.  I would like everything that is open to say open.  Just have the password screen come up after 10 minutes
so why not the screensaver is working..... i mean is it not working only when you put a password or not all coming up ??
The sceen saver does not come up all the time.  Even when no programs are running.

Mike
Mike,

If you don't want to use the many screen, desktop, pc lock programmes that are available for less you can allways do it by hand.

Windows XP has a shortcut that will automatically lock your computer: Click the Windows key  (the flying window key at the bottom of the key board and the L key . This will bring up your login screen and lock your computer down.

   1. To log back in, type Ctrl+Alt+Delete if necessary, and type in your user ID and password .

Good luck!
Hi

Doing it manually sort of defeats the purpose of someone getting called away from their desk and not remembering to lock it.
Mike,

Here I found a FREE tool for you to use.
Have a look here -> http://www.vandog.com/loc.html

There are many situations when you need to limit access to your computer after you leaving it for a few minutes.

This program locks your computer with password that can be different from your system password. You can also use standard Windows password and have double protection.

You can allow people to leave messages without access to another programs. Finally, it shows you pulsing clock and creeping line.

This program is freeware. If you want to get the Delphi source code, please buy something and then contact me to get the full source of this project.

How does it works?

This part can be interesting for the software developers:

The program uses included "system-wide hook DLL" to disable all Windows task-switching controls and hot keys. For example:

 Alt+Tab [Task switching]

 Ctrl+Esc [Start Menu]

 Win [Windows key: Start Menu]

 Win+Tab [Special task switching mode]

 Win+Pause [Windows system properties]

Win+D [Show Desktop using Windows key]

 Win+E [Run Explorer]

 Win+F+(Ctrl) [Find:All (and Find: Computer)]

 Win+M [Minimize all windows]

 Win+R [Run program]

 Win+F1 [Windows Help]

If you are developing a screensaver, a kiosk-alike application or a full-screen game, you know that this is not an easy exercise. The mentioned library (WinLock.dll) solves this problem and you can use and distribute it without limitations.

A copy of the library appears in your Windows folder after you installing a copy of Lock O'Clock. Feel free to copy the library file (WinLock.dll) to include it in your project. Simple VB and Delphi examples are here.

Greetings!
Hehe, someone can even leave a message. Very cool.

Thank you there is an optical mouse and that solution makes sense.

Mike
Ehm Mike, are you going to change your mouse now?
No just make sure that it is on a mouse pad that is not the reflective
I'd of tried a ball mouse or something first... but a new mousepad may help, although they can get gummed up too, just don't let the glittery "stripper dust" get on your mouse pad... well strippers at work should be limited anyway ;)

Additional tip, to instantly lock the machine, use Windows key + L, this is the shortcut key for "Switch Users"
