Smartcard use with Windows XP Pro on a Dell Latitude Notebook

I currently have a Dell Latitude D610 PC with a smartcard reader build it.   I also purchase some Smartcards in Ebay and would like to be able to enable authentication on my laptop with the use of these Smartcards.  I need to have a backup card too in case I loose the main access card.

Questions:

Do I need any specific software to enable this, or does Windows XP Pro supports this by default ?

Do you know of any particular guide I can read to setup this  security on my notebook ?

Any quick  guide from you on how to enable authentication using Smartcards ?

Thank you !!

Thanks Ranganathan.  I wil try all your suggestions. I just purchased some smartcards on Ebay and these might not be compatible with my built in reader.  I think there is very little information on how to get this done properly.   Do you know if there is any  Smartcard installation for dummys out there ?

Thank you.
