srtspl64.sys blue screen

I was using a Gateway laptop running 64-bit Vista Home Premium. I noticed that it wasn't running any antivirus, so I helpfully went into msconfig and enabled Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) in startup and services.

Immediately on rebooting got a blue screen: stop 0x00000050   srtspl64.sys (related to SEP, I believe)

Every bit of advice online points to uninstalling SEP, but I cannot boot into Windows or use system restore.

Here's what I've done so far, with no success:

run startup repair
run last known good config
run Vista 64-bit recovery disk and discovered that there are no restore points
run safe mode, safe mode with networking (will not load; hangs on crcdisk.sys)

I am not able to boot into Windows Vista in any way.

Please help me fix this laptop so I can return it before Christmas!

Thanks,
Reckon

LOL.... Good fix.......
However, I dont think that will work on subsequent attempts as reliably as this one.... I that should NOT prevent services from starting... Sounds like it is similar to holding down the SHIFT KEY +Booting, to bypass startup entries.....

Uninstall it before you have to risk another error screen....

Johnb6767: I did try holding down the SHIFT key, and that didn't didn't work either!

I've uninstalled SEP with cleanwipe. When the machine rebooted, it ran checkdisk. (It's still running, so I'm not sure I'm home free yet.)

Thanks for your response. Your first link didn't work for me. I have several Ultimate Boot Disks, but for some reason, I thought they were only for XP (maybe because the versions I've seen seem so dated). Does UBD4WIN work on Vista and 7? You've used it successfully on Vista and 7?
Yes, you can use it to boot any system, as long as the sata controller drivers are present......
