Toshiba Canvio drive not recognized by windows xp or 8.1

Toshiba Canvio Slim II 0.5 TB purchased for file back up on a Dell XP Media center PC.  Used the provided NTI Backup software and backed up critical data files using daily and weekly backup routines for four + months.  Desktop Raid 0 array failed.  Using Utlimate Boot Disk CD and a backup HDD on the desktop, I was able to see the files on the Canvio drive using Explorer.  Now, I can't see the drive on the desktop. When I tried to use the Canvio drive on my XP laptop or my Windows 8.1 laptop, the drive is visible in device manager, but not accessible in explorer. Neither the serial number or the model number is recognized on the Toshiba website.  Other similar models have only HDD password tool drivers.

I've read all articles I can find on the issue on this site, Toshiba's site, Microsoft's site and any many others.
I tried the following:
tried different USB ports on both laptops
tried 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the Windows 8.1 machine
removed the disk and rebooted
removed the drivers in device manager and re-installed
tried to use Disk manager to rename the drive (option not available)
removed the USB hubs and restarted
purchased a powered USB hub
reset the power settings to not allow the computer to power down the USB root hubs

Toshiba Canvio Slim II
S3600-A   500GB DC  1.0A 08/13
P/N HDTD105XS3DI
S/N 63R4TTNPTWD6

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I suggest trying the drive on yet another machine. If you cannot read it anywhere, then you may need to take it to a data recovery specialist. You may want to do this now before trying to access it again to avoid activity which may make recovery more difficult.

Try GetDataBack https://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

Free to try.  If it sees your files pay the money for full functionality and recover your files.
Boot the PC that has the disk connected using a Linux LiveCD and check whether you can access the data. If you can, copy it off. A good such CD/DVD is knoppix:

I don't know anything about the backup tool you used. Does it do image type backups? Does pack the backups into legacy containers? Does it use a special file-system? You may have to install the tool on the PC you want to restore the data to, if the files aren't accessible via the LiveCD. Also run the diagnostic tool for the external disk, it should be available from the manufacturer's site.
You said you've used the Windows Disk Manager to rename the partition on this drive. Can you tell us if Disk Manager sees this drive at all? If yes then how? A screen shot of Windows Disk Management would be good to have.

ASKER

I've attached a file with the screen shots of device manager and disk manager.

Here's a link to the backup software used.

Have you tried GetDataBack yet?

The disk is being recognised by the system but it can't find the MBR or information to identify the file system.  See if GetDataBack (the trial version) can bypass that problem and see the actual files on the disk.
You need to initialize the drive first. Does it allow this?
Scan with GetDataBack in progress.  I'll update when I have the results.  Scan is taking a while so I'm hopeful.

I assumed that initializing the drive would erase the contents. So, I have not attempted that yet.
Initializing will not erase the data. It writes the serial number of the drive to sector zero and to windows registry. Nothing else. Then you can use either undelete partition or getdataback on it.
Getdataback completed its scan.  I've attached a screenshot.  However, when I try to preview the files, they appear corrupted.  I've checked excel, word and pdf file types.  The files I tried to view were from the NTFS file format at the top left of the Getdataback screen.   I also selected other file types, but the program ran out of memory before it could complete.

I have not purchased the full version yet.

The screenshot shows the image files from the backup program I had been running.

Suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

However, when I try to preview the files, they appear corrupted  <-- Your drive appears to be damaged (the contents) and you are going to need a professional recovery service at this point.

I was able to use Getdataback with a paid license to extract the files I wanted to retrieve.  Thank you very much for all your comments and assistance!
