Question

Need Step-by-Step Instructions for downloading and compiling ZedGraph into the SharpDevelop IDE

Asked by: coderlen

I'm intimidated. I've tried downloading .NET 3.5 and Visual C# Express with horrible results (I don't think there is a human being on the planet who has successfully downloaded and used .NET 3.5 yet). So, in desperation, I went to the Internet and downloaded a nice IDE solution, SharpDevelop.

The SharpDevelop installation went all right. I am able to compile and run source code on that IDE just fine.

I suppose I need to download .NET, either 2.0, or 3.5 (like THAT's going to happen). Or, perhaps there is another open source solution that can take the place of .NET. I've never programmed in a GUI environment before, so I'm not sure exactly what is required. But Microsoft's .NET has installation problems galore, so I don't think that's a viable solution for me.

I also need to add the ZedGraph libraries. All the instructions on the ZedGraph site are for .NET 3.5, and I tried to adapt those instructions for SharpDevelop, but of course I was not successful. I just need some step-by-step instructions to get the ZedGraph libraries in place on the SharpDevelop IDE, so I can start using them in programs.

I just need a little help and advice to get me over the hump. Thanks.

I think this is the first time I have ever heard of anyone having problems installing the .net framework, I'm also unsure of why you should have problems installing Visual C# express. Could you perhaps give som more information about what platform you are running on(Vista/xp)?

First download and install .net 3.5: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en
(this should be a "next" "next" type of installation)

Then download VS 2008 express and install: http://www.microsoft.com/express/download/

Then follow this tutorial for using zedgraph: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/graphics/zedgraph.aspx

My platform is Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

I am not the only one who has had big problems installing this software. I did a Google on some of the error messages I received, and there are a number of people having the same problems.

I am currently working another EE question (http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Installation/Q_23620593.html) to solve the problem of not being able to install Visual C# 2008 Express Edition. According to one of the experts on that thread, I have a problem with WMI, so I downloaded WMIDiag, and I do, indeed, have some missing files. So I will attempt to resolve that problem and see if it helps.

Thanks for the comment. I'll get back here when I finish the attempt at resolving the WMI issue and let you know if it worked.

devzero,
Sorry to have taken so long to close out this question. Your instructions SHOULD work, if the OS platform is up-to-date.

However, I have one of those pirated Russian Specials for an OS, Windows XP Pro. I thought I was saving money when I bought it, but, of course, it was pirated, and the 25-digit Product Key never was accepted as genuine by Microsoft. So, of course, I was unable to get a fully functional version of Service Pack 2, which is absolutely required for VS 2008.

I have decided to just order a genuine copy of Windows XP Home and install that, instead of messing around with my current installation. I have wasted way too many hours trying to get it to work.

So, thanks for your help, and for confirming that my problems were truly unique (for the reasons stated above), and that NOBODY should have a problem downloading VS 2008.
