The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Bare Metal Deployment On Site

Tags: bare, metal, deployment
Afternoon,

This Q is more aimed at the admins like myself who work within large organisations....with real experience on this please

Bare metal deployments - i need to figure out the best way to do this. Currently am faced with the task of having boxes shipped to the office, configured by the guys, and then shipped to site for install. Have now been offered by the vendor for them to image my machines straigh out of production and ship them to site. This is a great idea as it saves huge amount of courier costs and time, and i know extremely large organisations do this, but how - saying i have a sysprep'ed image that gets shipped on site...they turn it on and then what...surely the user doesnt have to go through the sysprep process...

I know of all the deployment tools - RIS, WDS, Acronis etc....but i dont fancy transfering that much data over the WAN only to load an image that still requires user intervention....

Just after some thoughts from past experience if i may

James

Hey Jay,

We do a few different builds.  We build our servers either with Altiris with the RDP pack for HP or Dell, or we use a DVD build.  In either case, all builds are scripted and not imaged.  This cuts down on image management during product changes.  The DVD build will also build on absolutely anything and isn't bound by the chipset.  The DVD build takes from 15 to 45 minutes to complete depending on the system.  The DVD allows us to build offline, DMZ, LAB, Production and have consistent builds.

The only initial user intervention on the DVD is to select the OS.  After that all software/agents get installed.  The Admin then logs on once at the end and is presented a signoff screen (custom app) that allows for quick access to the few final steps.  i.e.  Computer name, IP, Add to domain, teaming.

Sorry Jay,

I forgot to mention the DVD initially load WinPE at the start and use the Dell or HP scripting tool kits to configure the hardware, then you fire off the OS install.  The tool kits will automatically set the RAID level based on the amount of disks installed (hot spares are added later).

Hey Pat,

Thanks for the comments....I havent actually taken the time to look at the DELL scripting tools but will spend some time on it today....Any good reference sites by any chance to get started with it? or just go the whole hog and jump into it and hope for the best :)

Thanks again Pat

Hi Jay,

The examples in the Dell DTK were pretty good and just followed them and tweaked as necessary.  One thing to note, when buiding the WinPE image, make sure you install the WMI option.  Otherwise the DTK will fail. (http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t61439.html)

Also the RAID controller config program (raidcfg) requires a RAM drive to store temporary info during the creation of the RAID set.
i.e.
  %TOOLS_PT%\raidcfg -sl=%RAMDRIVE% -se -envn=CIDS -envc=getcontrollerslots > NUL
  if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto no_cont
  for %%i in (%CIDS%) do call a:\dell\dtk\scripts\mkraid.bat %%i

Let me know if you need anything else.
