Can someone recommend a good .NET obfuscator that costs less than 300 dollars? I am shocked to see some costing a single developer $1,800. Thats more than what I paid for Visual Studio 2005. I did not expect to be faced with the cost of something like an obfuscator to protect my code from easy decompiles because I chose to develop in .NET. Maybe that's small change to a big company but for someone just trying to make some money with shareware they write that is a lot. Thank's in advance.

Skater .Net sounds good. I wonder how well it is holding up in the world of crackers. The price seems nice.
The issue is sort of like this:
A man has a front door with glass windows. He spends an incredible amount of time putting a deadbolt and various locks on the door. This is all to prevent illegal entry. A thief doesn't think this way, he just breaks out the window, turns the knobs to the deadbolt and opens the other locks. What seems protected is easily defeated by a person with a deviant mind. Software protection is similar. If the person had a deadbolt that required a key on both sides, then he would be a lot more protected. As it has been said, "locks keep honest people honest."
I we can really do is do our best to try to protect it and make it difficult. One way of doing this is by obfuscation and making fake methods that really don't do anything, but have similar signatures to the real ones. Signing your code so that it can't be tampered with is another. This uses public key/private key encryption and makes a hash of your program that can only be made by the original code. If the code is modified this original hash will show it. All of these items complicate the build process. The only way to maintain your sanity is to stop building through the IDE and build a batch to do all of these steps or it has been mentioned that you can use nant. Personally, my batch file worked just fine for my code.
