ok, I'll probably go with the upgrade to the existing application tier. Any docs specifically addressing moving a tfs database from one host to another?

Browse All TopicsWe currently run a TFS 2005 environment that uses a local SQL 2005 database. I would like to install a fresh copy of TFS 2008 on a new server and connect it to a clustered SQL 2008 database instance and then restore my current sql 2005 databases. Is this possible? Anyone ever done it or have documenation?

After you move your data tier - watch out for this: http://social.msdn.microso
Our IT folks did the move and this issue has been looming for months. Just tonight I followed the instructions in the 2nd to last post and it worked like a charm. The key is that you keep your old DB around for a bit specifically for situations like this:)

As a general rule, this is straight forward. You just uninstall TFS 2005 (all your data will be preserved) and install TFS 2008. New client and old clients will both work. By far the trickiest part will be upgrading from Sharepoint 2.0 to Sharepoint 3.0 (2007) or MOSS 2007. My best advice is read the corresponding upgrade instructions (ours and/or WSS). The TFS installation guide is here: http://www.microsoft.com/d ownloads/d etails.asp x? FamilyID =FF12844F- 398C-4FE9- 8B0D-9E841 81D9923&di splaylang= en. And here's a reference to the Sharepoint upgrade instructions: http://technet.microsoft.c om/en-us/o ffice/shar epointserv er/bb42125 9.aspx
