Remove Deleleted Branches from VSS 8

My shop is using VSS 8 for our code and we are starting to get into branching.

What I have found is after I delete all branches of a file it is still branched. Also, if I select "merge" on the file (after deleting the branches) the window that appears lists a bunch of "** Deleted **" branches to selected and merge. Of course the merge button is not active as the file doesn't exist, but how do I get rid of the "delete" options? I have purged the system to permanently remove the files but the 'delete' branch still lists. I have included a screen shot to help explain this further.
