The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Getting the Correct Permissions for an Apache2 based Subversion Server on Jaunty accessed from WinXp using Tortoise

I have built a PC with Jaunty Server (9.04) and added Gnome desktop. I have successfully (after effort!) installed Apache2, MySQL, PHP, phpmyadmin, webmin and a few other bits and pieces. All those seem to work, but three of the things I have installed resolutely refuse to work as I would hope.
One of these is Subversion. I installed 1.5.4 using the apt-get install subversion and configured as instructed. The www space is /var/www/highlawn-repo/svn (although svn does NOT exist - apparently thats as it should be). The actual svn area is within the root area. SVN contains conf, db, hooks, locks subdirectories. All are reported s being Owner 33 and Group 33 access. I did do the sudo chown -R www-data:www-data svn command as instructed.

I also installed TortoiseSVN on my Windows PC with the intention of using that as a client to the Jaunty SVN installation. Although it recognises the server when trying to browse the (empty) repository I get a message stating "OPTIONS of 'http://192.168.0.99/highlawn-repo/svn': 200 OK (http://192.168.0.99)". Despite the "OK" bit - this is reported in red and preceded by the word Error. Sometimes I get a message stating that the request was refused by the server - even though everything was found.

I'm now stuck and google is not presenting a great deal of solutions although others seem to be having similar difficulties.

I should mention for completeness that I also intsalled vsftpd and whilst the server works, when I try and use my client to upload items I get a permission denied error. Again - I have chown'd and chomd'd everything in sight! For completeness - my BIND installation isn't working properly either! I intend to post questions for those two as well separately but it may be significant to this perhaps?
