Why is NUnit useful?

I'm familiar with what NUnit does but haven't actually used it. From what I've seen, you create corresponding methods for NUnit to test against. These don't have the same implementation as your production methods. They are simply setup to implement asserts. If the implementations are completely different, how is that test of any use?

All of your NUnit methods can pass. However, because your production methods (with their more complex implementations) were never stressed, you have no idea what will happen. At least in the examples I've read about, I don't see how NUnit provides any type of code coverage. Can someone clarify why they believe it is useful and how it actually validates your implementation?
