The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Disjoin a Domain without being connected to the domain

Tags: domain, disjoin, from, without
I was given some PC's that were within an University Domain... and they were not disjoined from the Unversity's Domain they were operating in.   I now have to create a network using these PC's ....  How can I disjoin them without being connected to the university network?   I need to load their My Documents files onto the PC drive that is within each PC... (Stored on server before)  How do I get the PC's back to a stand alone workstation.   Not possible to get back onto Unversity Domain...  I want to eliminate all of the log on options at the start of the start up of Windows XP... and the Logoff Scripts

You just need local admin rights to disjoin a domain.  You will receive a warning that it cannot contact the domain, but you can safely ignore this.  Do you have a local admin login?

Just log in to "this computer" as the local administrator, right click on My Computer, select properties.
On tne computer name tab, select, Network ID and make the machine a member of a Workgroup

Hi cheyennemtnman,

I would strongly suggest that if you are moving these computers to a new domain that you reinstall the operating system if possible.  There are many legacy issues which can hang around and haunt you for the remainder of the life of the computer.

If you can't do that, then as long as you log in as the local administrator as mentioned above, you can unjoin the domain.  When the box pops up asking for a user name and password just click OK without entering any, and it should continue without a problem.

Okay I tried the above .. now I can not log into the computer.... any suggestions?  It now does not list the number of user signons it had for the domain ... which is good but now it seems the one name that comes up for logon but the password that I had does not work now...

How can I remove the password check when I boot up the PC?  Will I have to go to Command Prompt  on a repair Windows installation option?

In my comment above, I had stated that you needed to log in with the LOCAL Administrator account, which it seems like you didn't do.  If you weren't sure of the local administrator's password, you could have reset it by logging in with domain credentials (if your domain account was a member of the administrators group) and then logging back in with the local administrator account to remove the computer from the domain.  If you haven't removed the other computers, then this is what you need to do.

If you cannot find out what the local administrator password is, try using a blank password.  If that doesn't work, then no, you cannot just do a repair installation because that won't wipe out the security accuonts.  You would need to do a fresh install (boot from the CD and reformat/reinstall).

You can otherwise use a bootCD (such as BartsPE or UBCD4WIN -- www.ubcd4win.com) to reset the administrator password.

Yeah I have seen these Password recovery programs ... I used the suggested by techsoeasy and now reset the password... but now I am getting a ton of RunDll error messages at the logon point... ( error in running del.dll Magic@16 in runing the SVSHOST file and it continues beeping error messages until I sign in with the new password... then there a ton of RUNDLL with 0 bytes in the Task Manager.... the desktop comes up but I have to manually end task on the hundreds of empty RUN DLL's

If you're getting RunDll errors at startup, then you need to disable whatever is causing those since it's probably a leftover domain login script or some such thing.

Click START > Run > MSCONFIG

On the Startup Tab, find the dll that is mentioned in the error messages and uncheck the box next to it to disable.

You might also want to reset the administrator password again from within Windows just in case the BootCD Utility didn't catch everything that needed to be adjusted.

Well I got where I wanted to be... I used a Password recovery tool to reset the Admin logon and password then  I ran Microsoft Windows install with repair option (2nd) and had a few glitches aftwards... ran chkdsk /p  then re-ran the repair option which asked for the Product ID ... went through the repair process / re-install.... then logged on with the newly created Admin logon ... Windows came up and I went to control panel and User Accounts to set up the Account that will be used by the User and gave that logon admin status... Things are golden at this time... Thanks to all of you... for the suggestions...
