Hmm could be the APP.
Get a hold of WireShark and do a capture at the server you can either post the results here or upload the capture to a 3rd party ftp service like http://www.rapidshare.com/

Browse All TopicsOk, so I have installed a new server running QB Enterprise Solutions 7.0 and its just crawling.
The current setup is a dell poweredge server with a dual core xeon 2.0GHz processor, 2GB of ram and 2 SATA hard drives in a RAID 1 array.
The workstations are both P4's with 512MB of ram and plenty of hard drive space.
When I first got it the company file was 350MB and it just crawled. In addition to being a huge data file it has been around since QB 6 and just kept getting upgraded. I got the Data Transfer Utility from Intuit and transferred otu the last two years worth of data into a new file and got it down to 65MB, but its still crawling.
What else havent I tried?

I dont think any of those will help. As QB goes up in versions, so the efficiency goes down. The 2007 release is a real DOG. It is bad enough on a single workstation, but when you have an approx 100 MB datafile shared over the network, it is a serious problem for QB. This is because the QB application tries to load ALL of the data file on each workstation over the network, and then micro-manage each incremental save to the server every time you make a change, so it creates incredible amounts of network traffic that is not necessary if it was a well thought out application. QB stopped being efficient at version 4.
If you really want a solution, you will need to call Intuit ... and if you can get anyone knowledgeable on the phone, which is hard to do, you will probably find that that is the way the program works. Good luck.
Supposedly, the "new" QB has an SQL backend so that it can support larger DB andmore concurrent users.
The old stuff was using some kind of Btreive peer to peer mechanism which, when used by up to 5 users would become a dog.
Strange, that something like Peachtree Complete.is actually a decent product speedwise and uses the same type of DB file locking mechanism.
I see a lot of folks complaing about QB being a dog in multiuser mode.
I have seen posts stating that the issue is M$ server 2003 and that backrevving to W2K server fixes the slowness issues.
If you have a copy,I would give it a try and see what happens.
As for the capture thing,I wanted to see exactly what was going on between the clients and server whenever QB is being accessed.
A poorly written app will have a fingerprint of how well data is moving back and forth between the two.
When you see stuff like data moving in 4K chunks, you know that somebody did a hambone job with the code.
Oh yeah,it appears as if you aren't the only folks with this issues:

I wonder if you can sue Intuit for a defective product?

Maybe try excluding the company files from real time virus scanning. What antivirus are you using?
