The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Change IP Server 2003 - Slow Logon, Slow Quickbooks
Tags: slow, server, 2003, quickbooks, ip
I recently moved a Windows 2003 standard server to a new location and had to change the IP address from 192.168.100.x to 192.168.1.x and temporally use the old businesses Internet access (Network Telephone modem/router/firewall - can not access box)

The XP Pro SP2 Workstations logon slow and QuickBooks Enterprise 2006 (multi-user) is more than slow to open and function; it takes 5-10 minutes or more to open - even when clicking on the actual data file on the server associated to QB to open. All other functions other than QuickBooks appear to work well once logged in. Browse, internet, RDP - I can open QB and function using RDP from a workstation to the server holding the QB data file.
I did get an error message from QB workstation (non-RDP) after a long wait to open QB that a firewall may be interfering with QuickBooks though no firewall is active on the server, the only firewall is the Network Telephone box. The old business is using VOIP currently. These same workstaions were accessing QB in the other location OK with the old IP address.

I have an active DHCP server on the router and removed the old scope on the Windows Server and did not add a new scope - I have used both static IP on the XP boxes and dynamic from the router, I changed the forwarders and Windows DNS Server IP to the new one - statcally applied the Windows DNS server IP to the XP workstations but I have to add external DNS to the workstation to get internet access. There are no errors in the event log and all seems as it should in the DNS setup etc.

Any ideas on how to make this setup work until our new modem/router (Bellsouth) is in place at the end of the month or latter?

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Is that an AD Domain?

If so:

> but I have to add external DNS to the workstation to get internet access

That is why it's taking so long.

As long as you provide the clients with a DNS server that cannot resolve internal Domain Service Records it will run very slowly.

Why do you need that external DNS Server there? Your internal DNS server should be capable of doing that for you.

All machines (including the DNS server itself) should have your Windows DNS Server as their preferred - and only DNS server - if they cannot contact DNS then your network will slow to a crawl and errors will occur ad AD cannot be found.

You resolve external names be setting up a forwarder(s) in the properties tab in DNS.

Yes, AD Domain - the reason I add the external DNS to the workstations is I can not connect to the Internet using only the Server DNS forwarders.
I have also setup WS with Server DNS only though I have not given it a chanse to fully function omiting reboots... though I have rebooted the server once the new server IP and forwarders were in place three times.

Thanks - Bruce

I can't help you specifically with Quick Books. It's only really an assumption that it's having problems authenticating against the server hosting it and that's having a knock-on effect on Quickbooks.

However, you need to fix your DNS Server so it can resolve external DNS names. Adding an external entry onto the client causes far more harm than good.

So, if we have a look at that. Do you have any Firewall Rules relating to your DNS Server? If not, remove the Forwarders it has configured entirely. That means the server should fallback to using the Root Hints file (Root Hints tab in DNS Server properties) to find addresses.

You should also check for the presence of a zone called "." under Forward Lookup Zones.

Hmmm, it is my understanding that you do not set the server IP  in the servers TCP/IP DNS properties as it knows itself an can create problems. Fact or fiction? - Is this an issue?

If I locate a zone named *.*, what should be done with it - remove it I assume? Should I remove all forward lookup zones and allow to rebuild?

I'm not at the site right now, thank you for your assistance.

> as it knows itself an can create problems. Fact or fiction? - Is this an issue?

Fiction, never heard that one before, but it's certainly not true.

AD Servers should point to themselves, or another internal DNS Server as preferred DNS Server in TCP/IP configuration. The configuration should not include any DNS servers that cannot answer requests about the local domain (basically that means you use a DC for a DNS server, nothing else unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're changing).

It's because Active Directory stores all it's domain location settings in DNS as Service Records. These are used by clients (and servers, including the DC) to figure out where it should be passing authentication requests.

If you see a zone named "." under Forward Lookup Zones it should be deleted, there's no need to delete any others though. We just need to get that server in a state where it's able to resolve internet requests for you. Then you can hopefully happily remove the external DNS server settings from everywhere and things stand a chance of returning to normal :)

Thanks Chris - it seems to have shook itself out - all extra DNS entries have been removed and things are operating as they should. enjoy the points, you earned them. Thanks for all your help and the others that commented.
