The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Why does my QuickBooks 2006 file takes forever to open?
Tags: quickbooks, slow, 2006, file
I'm running QuickBooks 2006 Pro.  I have a three user license.  My current configuration is 3 PC's, all very fast, i.e. E6400 w/2GB RAM, etc.  My company file is currently 300+ MB's.  When opening the company file it is very slow.  Its slow across the network and on the local machine in which the file is stored.  Is the size of my file what is causing my slowness?  These computers otherwise run extremely fast.  Thanks in advance.

I currently run Quickbooks 2006 as well and my file is no wheres as big as your is and mine loads slow also.  It's primary do to the links that it has to connect to through the software pkg, i.e. invoiceing to customer base to billing etc.  I have always had it load very slow.  Once it's open it runs fine.
I've always run my live updates and there has never been a fix for this.  Just must be the intracacies of the software.
Sorry....

Once opened mine continues to run quirky.  Meaning that if I'm in the bank register and i choose to enter in something into a field it takes a few seconds for the field to become active.  Before we upgraded from 2004 everything worked much faster than now.  That was also running much slower computers.

Did you try uninstalling it and then reinstalling the version stright from scratch without an upgrade to it.  When I went to 2006 version, I uninstalled the '04 version and then did a fresh install of '06 and it worked great.  Again, slow to open but works good once open.  Of course then I ran a conversion from '04 to the '06 format which was built right in to the '06 version (of course).  Also, of course back up your data first.

The install was on brand new computers.  We installed QB 2006 then converted the old company file.

Uninstall and then reinstall. If that doesn't help, make sure your file is fine and you converted it to newer version. Try making a file from scratch in a newer version.

Have you contact Quickbooks support for some feedback.
Also, check the help screens within quickbooks, there are some tuning options.
Let me know how you make out.  You indicate you are having no other issues outside of quickbooks ?? The PCs are running great outside of quickbooks ?
1 other thing to keep in mind.  The amount of RAM in a PC.  If you are running alot of minor applications in the background (antivirus, media player, ctmon, spybot, etc.)  these will consume RAM.  Quickbooks is also a large user of RAM.  When your running slow and slugish like you indicate, launch the task manager and check your RAM usage and paging/swapping.

Once QuickBooks is open and even while opening, the PC is only running using about 350MB of Memory.  Don't forget as mentioned above all of these machines have Core 2 Duo's E6400 and 2GB of DDR2.  This being the case I know its not the PC.  From what I'm finding on the Internet so far it would appear that the file size is my problem.  I'm seeing recommendations of 100MB files or less.  Mine is upwards of 300MB.

Absolutely your file size is enormous... as I indicated above, mine loads slow  but once it's loaded it runs fairly good.  To reduce your file size, can you archive some old invoices or inactive customers or check logs.

Points are for your efforts.  The company has an enormous amount of work that needs to be done to their QB file.  Accountant work.  Thanks for your time.
